GM/Winter Meetings Thread

Nelson Cruz to Mariners 58M/4 years.

I'd estimate that at about 12M/win. Biggest overpay of the off-season so far.

Interesting to see the position players signing so quickly compared to the starting pitchers. There are going to be some bargains to be had for teams willing to wait on the starting pitching. It is an over-supplied market this off-season. And which team acted precipitously to net a starting pitcher?

Another great example of the birth of a historically bad contract

Except that it's probably the player that puts them over the top. In which case a strategic overpay isn't such a bad idea.

If you look at the big contracts the Mariners have given out, they've been remarkably canny with the money they spend. They'll spend a bunch, but the guys they buy perform. Felix, Cano, Seager.

Imagine if the Mets signed both Heyward and Justin next offseason. I doubt it happens because they are practically flushing money down the drain signing Colon, Granderson, and Cuddyer.

Its a little early to grade the Cano and Seger deals. No one doubted Cano would be good in 2015, it's paying him 25 mill a year when he is in his late 30 ' s and early 40 ' s where the deal is bad. As for Seager, no one signed 100 million dollar deal without performing, Seager hasn't played 1 game since signing so let's wait a few games before saying it was a good contract.

If Cruz isn't a 3+ WAR player for the first two years of this deal, it will look poor. He will likely be a 1-2 WAR player for the final two (at best).

Interesting that the Braves asked for Dexter Fowler in the deal, too.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Braves and Astros had trade discussions earlier this offseason about a deal involving Evan Gattis.
The interesting part is that the Braves wanted the Astros to take on B.J. Upton and his contract along with Gattis, which Houston didn't want to do. Atlanta would have received Dexter Fowler and a pitching prospect and possibly Carlos Corporan in the trade. While things didn't work out in the first go-round, Rosenthal says talks between the two sides could be rekindled because the Astros remain interested in Gattis.

Gattis/BJ for Fowler would be awesome. I wish I knew what the hold up was. I hope it's not something like the Braves trying to get out from the entire contract. If we need to pay 2 mill a year to facilitate a deal like this do it. BJ is addition by subtraction.

Why would we have interest in Corporan other than being a warm body behind the plate. A lot of options out there at C. Especially for a part time role...

That said, really like Dexter Fowler. Always seemed like the Braves have coveted him too.

Who cares? Take the deal.

Apparently even the Astros can't stomach Melvin.

I'm sure there will be overpay at the back of the Cano deal. I mean, he'll be, like, 87. They felt that was what they needed to do to get the player.

Seager will be worth every penny. He's a flat stud. I understand your point that he hasn't yet done it.

It's hard to explain just how hard that park is to hit in.

I am not criticizing the Cano deal, but how good it was will be determined by the teams success before the back end of that deal. Win a world series, or even just get to one, and I call the deal a success. Not making the playoffs makes year 1 a failure. That's why I think we could have raped them in a trade with both Gattis and Justin.

Melvin is the hold-up I'm sure. Braves will probably have to send a couple of bags of cash with him in any successful attempt to dump him. That's probably what they are haggling about. Agree with Tapate50 on the Corporan angle. Get another mid-level pitching prospect instead.
