Grading Waldrep's Stuff

More stuff on the splitter.

We know stuff+ on FG loves his splitter. But Savant also gives his splitter a Run Value of 7, which ties Waldrep for 5th in the majors among the 42 pitchers that have thrown at least 50 splitters this year. But his RV per 100 pitches actually leads all of MLB at 4.3.

He has the 2nd highest K% on the splitter behind Logan Gilbert. And his 45.7% whiff rate ranks him 5th.

Sounds like a deadly pitch

Could this be the death blow to the Waldrep splitter debate?

My takeaway from this is: “his command wasn’t good last year, so it is bound to regress and get worse as the season goes on .”

That seems like lazy analysis to me. Why has his command improved? They don’t believe it is real. I am more optimistic about that.

Especially when there have been mechanical changes pointed out that could easily be contributing to the command improvement.

I think it's reasonable for someone to believe the command regresses a little, only because his command has been excellent since coming back up. I am bit skeptical myself the command has improved THAT much.

Regardless, he's proven he's a MLB quality pitcher at this point.

Waldrep from what I understand has always struggled with mechanics. Even in college he was prone to slow starts. So I wouldnt be shocked if he regresses in ST and needs a few starts at AAA to get back on track. I am no pitching mechanic expert but watching old clips of Waldrep he seems to have slowed his delivery. Look at his arm whip action just before releasing the ball. Old clips its really fast and it just looks like it would be hard to have a consistent release point. In new clips his arm action is slower and his release point looks really consistent. I think that is why his control improved.

It's almost like before the experts started noticing I said this. No I'm not patting myself in the back but command and ability to get to the splitter has always been my issue with Waldrep. I've said I don't care about the stats behind it..when he's ahead in the count and can throw it, it's tough to hit. Can't that be a great thing instead of whether or not it's rpms are acceptable?

I'm happy for him as a braves fan. All I care about is can he be successful. If this new Waldrep is permanent, sign us all up.
