Hector Olivera signs with the Dodgers

I know what you said. My original quoted post was different and I combined the two points.

I'm still curious how the Braves plan to replace Heyward and Upton's production. The smart posters on this board told me we couldn't afford them. so how the hell are we going to be able to afford anyone?

I thought we were going to solve this on the Cuba market

To be fair, there are a lot of players out there, including some cubans, that won't cost the $20+ mil that Heyward and Upton will each get.

It will be really interesting to see what kind of season Heyward has and the money he gets based off it. If he continues to be inconsistent with the bat, he won't get the $24 mil/year. I think he'd settle in around getting $17-18 mil if he doesn't figure that part out. I think he will have a much better season with the bat, though.

The dream is dead. Cue Braves related TJ jokes . . .

@JeffPassan

Sources: Serious concern Cuban IF Hector Olivera has damaged UCL and could need Tommy John surgery.

@JeffPassan

At least one offer for Hector Olivera topped $50M, according to sources, and others were expected to get there. UCL damage a tough blow.

Perfect, sign him for much cheaper than initially thought and have him totally healthy for 2017, when we take over the world.
This is how we get superstars.

First the Minor news and now this news, lovely...

Olivera's reps likely just doing damage control. I believe I've read where they are letting teams perform some type of medical examination on him during the private workouts. Kinda seems like "amateur hour" when it comes to his so-called agents. If it's marginal, he could elect to forego surgery and sign a one-year, incentive-laden deal.

@JesseSanchezMLB
Reps for Hector Olivera surprised to hear report & unaware of any UCL damage. Say HO feels fine & had private workout for a club last week.

Ben Badler had just posted a hours ago about Hector Olivera being on the cover of Baseball America. And now it comes out that be may be seriously hurt and need TJS. Oh well.

Now MLBTR adds: "Sources from within Olivera’s camp say Olivera has passed four physicals with no issues and the report about the UCL injury is “absolutely not true,” Baseball America’s Ben Badler reports (all Twitter links).* Olivera’s representatives also deny that they have received any offers; since Olivera isn’t officially a free agent yet, he isn’t allowed to negotiate with MLB teams."

I'm sure the Hart haters will say something stupid when he signs elsewhere, Dodgers is my guess.

The previous speculation was that he would sign within 24 hours of being declared a free agent. Not sure if the left elbow thing will affect that.

Like every free agent, he belongs to the Dodgers unless they decide they don't want him. The Giants may be more aggressive on him given the Pence injury. I'd guess that we will make an offer but we won't win.

And there you have the whole problem in front of you in a nutshell. IF Heyward had been interested in an 8 year extension for $17 million per LAST WINTER, he'd still be here and none of this would've gotten so many folks' panties in a wad. Interesting note - 8 x $17,000,000 = $136,000,000 - I think I recall someone about the same age with significantly better numbers signing for that amount...hmmmmmm...somebody help me now...who was that dude???

He gambled that he'd become that offensive force that would get him significantly more than that within 2 years, and definitely didn't show enough to the Braves for them to feel that he was going to be that over the first 50% of his gamble. He now has 162 games to do that for everyone else.

Like many, I'm pulling for him and hope he doesn't crap out because that's a helluva lot of money to lose - ask Jeff Francoeur if he wishes he'd have taken his extension when Mac did. I hear you coming bitchers - that's in no way an effort to compare the two of them OTHER THAN to point out that having his financial future taken care of at that age sure helped Mac become a much better player, not to mention eventually led to a mega-contract (even if it was a few years later).

Genuine question: was there any indication that the Braves were willing to sign him for that last offseason?

To be fair, there are vague rumors of an injury, so Hart might be interested after all.

WOW! Not sure how I feel about that number.

@RobertMurrayDR
Source: Belief in industry is that the #Braves have an offer of roughly $50 million out to Hector Olivera.
