Hector Olivera signs with the Dodgers

Some other teams view the Dodgers as the strong favorite in the Yoan Moncada sweepstakes.

Maybe part of the Braves front office plan all along was to stack up on pitching and capitalize on the influx of Cuban hitters. Would make sense.

"Maybe part of the Braves front office plan..."

"Would make sense."

Your second point seems to disprove your first. :icon_biggrin:

Here in lies one of the biggest flaws in the setup of the MLB. If you are born an American or Canadian, you are subject to drafting. You have no choice. If you are latin american you can choose where ever you want to sign as a youngster. Now if you are Cuban you get to go to the highest bidder, period. If you are Asian you must pay the host countries baseball organizations to even be allowed to bid on them.
This favors Cubans and Asians as being available to big money big market teams primarily. This need to change, all players regardless of origin should be required to submit to the draft, giving all teams equal chance at them.

There was a push about a decade ago to simply have an international draft and maybe with relations with Cuba getting warmer, that might be a possibility within the next decade. It still wouldn't solve the problem related to exclusive bargaining rights with professional players from other countries, but it would go a long way toward leveling the playing field.

It's a joke that these players go to the highest bidder. Parody makes for the best product and this spits at parody right in the face.

Why is it a joke?

I wish the amateur market was more like the Cuban market. Let's reward the players and not the Tampa Bay Rays.

Agreed. I saw a Rob Manfred interview (new commish) where he predicted there will eventually be a setup like this where everyone will be subject to the same draft process across the globe. Can't come soon enough for mid-market and small-market teams.

The sport which has the most parody is the most popular. Is there a coincidence with that?

An international draft would be pretty cool. And remember that you don't necessarily have to have buy-in from individual players to be drafted. How many kids in the NA draft get drafted and choose to go to college?

Here is where the rubber meets the road. Guess we'll probably get rolled by the big boys again.

Not so fast ...

There is an expectation among some executives that Oakland will take a run at Yoan Moncada -- as they did with Yoenis Cespedes.

Except the consensus is that capping the amateur market hurts small market teams.

The reason for that is that you essentially remove alternative methods of spending to improve your team. This leave only free agency which small market teams are grossly disadvantaged.

If you want examples of why this is true look at the Pittsburgh Pirates and Kansas City Royals. Both of those teams used over slot spending strategies in the draft. Both of those teams were hurt in the name of parody.

What the hell are you talking about? MLB has the most parity of any sport. Far more than the Patriots, Colts, Ravens, Steelers, and Broncos show.

The difference is that small market teams aren't at a direct disadvantage in the NFL. So I understand thethe's point.

But watch MLB continue to castrate the amateur market's earning potential. You'll start to see more and more elite talent put down baseball gloves for basketballs and footballs.

The time players get to free agency thiugh are in the years of diminishing returns so I think free agency is a real inefficient use of your money. So if you allow these teams to use their dollar advantage to buy out prime years and price it out of small market teams then they are getting the true advantage. I don't care about the Nats spending big money in max because the contract will look awful halfway through. But a guy like Moncada could be a stud the whole length of his deal.
