HOLBERT discusses PERAZA debut

Ya, I don't see why everyone wants to get rid of cj, but won't entertain the thought of sitting bj. Starting a terrible player for the next 3 1/2 years just cause he makes a lot of money is counterproductive to success. How about...

1. Peraza

2. Heyward

3. Jup

4. Freddie

5. Gattis

6. TLS

7. CJ

8. Simmons

Looks a lot better than any lineup with BJ in it.

What people fail to realize is BJ and CJ would go down and put up ridiculous numbers in the minors. Everyone wants the shiny new toy.

Sometimes the shiny new toy is better. Example, La Stella versus Uggla.

LaStella had a lot more experience and success than Peraza. And we were asking him to play 2B, big difference. You need a lot more production from a corner spot. Peraza needs another year in the minors and when he does come up and OPS' .700, who is going to be happy with that from our 3B? The answer at 3B does not lie within our organization.

Different subject but wtf was Wren thinking with that CJ extension? I know it's not an absurd amount of money but I didn't want to be locked into that guy for 3 more years. He had to show a lot more than done babip luck.

The question is whether in a year or so he can give you more production than CJ. Taking into account defense and base running, I'd say its likely.

First off you need overall production regardless of what side of the ball is on. If Peraza can be a plus defender at 3B that will go a long way to cover up any issues (if any) he has with the bat. Also note he is an excellent base stealer which is something that won't show up in in the ancient OPS stat but does in newer stats that most people pay attention to.

Everyone would love another Chipper at the hot corner. Someone with plus power, that can walk and hits for a good average and isn't a butcher on defense. However those guys are rare these days and also make a ton of money.

No doubt in my mind, plus Peraza won't be a double play machine like CJ either. He has a better arm and better range (including a better first step, etc) to play third, so the upgrade on defense at third would probably be a lot. Shoot even La Stella who is nothing special defensively looks great compared to Uggla. It would be an even bigger upgrade on defense from CJ to Peraza who is known for being great defensively.

If Peraza put up a .700 OPS that would be better than CJ putting up what he does normally (career OPS numbers) when you factor in his speed and all the stolen bases minus all the rally killing double plays. Then you add the big upgrade on defense and Peraza leaves CJ in the dust.

This! Plus the poster keep saying that Peraza has no power, he makes up for the "no power" with stolen bases, 2B and 3B. Also people here equate power to HR only. Peraza has lead the Carolina League in triples and stolen bases which in my book is just fine when you already have a bunch of power hitters on your team.

Johnson DPs!?! What about your golden boy over at SS and his inability to hit worth a lick. He's the king of DPs and not in the defense variety.

You can't even utter Chris Johnson with Andrelton Simmons! Simmons at least offers defensive value, Johnson doesn't offer either. Also what in the world does that have to do with Peraza taking over for Johnson?!

So, you're saying you'd rather have CJ than Simmons. Wow.

I think he just knows CJ has those flaws noted and since he cannot dispute that he takes shots at Simmons. Further, CJ has been a noted DP machine since fans in Houston gave him that nickname. There was even an article about how on average he was one of the worst in MLB. But then last year he had a year where he didn't do that as in the past while having a career year. Now the old CJ is back minus the power he once showed.

How many games has he lost us hitting into DPs?!

The easy, quick answer to that is none. Guy makes contact and had a little work on his swing. You'd rather have another guy striking out 60 times in two months?

Conext for the debate:

Johnson 13 GIDP (a bunch)
Simmons 11 GIDP (ditto)
Freeman 10 GIDP (surprise)
Heyward 1 GIDP
Gattis 1 GIDP
