I didn’t vote for Trump but I’m cautiously optimistic

Indeed. We should deport everyone who spent any time here on an expired visa. Fair is fair.
lawmakers can decide what punishments they want to impose on people who may have overstayed a visa. but crossing the border illegally isn't a grey area. they were never invited or approved to be here. why are you opposed to removing them?

I'm opposed because people who have been here a long time and worked and contributed should be valued. They are an asset to our country.

Yes. If they committed a crime they should be deported. But those who have come here to work and done that should be valued and treated with respect. It is not beyond our capacity to have compassion for people who leave their countries under dire circumstances and come here for work. I'm advocating for something similar to the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. It is a much better alternative to these mass deportations.

1. do you believe breaking our immigration laws is committing a crime?

2. if yes, should we deport them?

Yes and no if they have been here over 5 years and been otherwise law abiding and contributing members of society. I think for those people we should have an amnesty and pathway to citizenship.

Then you shouldn't be too concerned because things are getting more expensive even with them here.

You will have to forgive me if I’m not compelled by the argument that inflation already happening is a good reason to create more. They don’t cancel each other out like negatives.

and did they pay the appropriate amount of federal taxes for those 5+ years? if not, do you consider that breaking our laws?

and even if I accepted your premise of giving some relief (I don't), I do not understand your objection to ICE doing its job

The people in this situation are largely likely paying taxes to begin with, but what is the appropriate amount of federal taxes for an individual?

It should be noted that defunding ICE and defunding the IRS both work to increase law breaking. I'm personally opposed to both. I find it amusing that our avatars of law and order are so excited about the idea of neutering the IRS. Makes me wonder if law and order is really their thang.

I would also note that defunding ICE would have the unintended effect of strengthening the economy and the country's fiscal health. Not that this is enough to make me want to defund ICE.

Neutering the IRS will have catastrophic effects on the country's fiscal stability. Not that this will stop our law and order friends who also claim to be fiscal conservatives from rejoicing in such an outcome.
