If we lose this series what then for next year

Playing in the FA arena is dangerous for a team like the Braves and their payroll. An albatross contract could cripple us if we don't get the infusion from the minors.

We need to be spending on the minor league (draft, IFA mkts) where you get better return on your dollar. We will likely get a pick for Mac, so that should help (we may go cheap though).

We do need a TOR arm though. I think Minor and Teheranosaur could be a great combo with another year. That TOR arm isn't gonna be cheap.

I think we've reached the maximum in the albatross contract department.

Everyone here knows I'd trade Uggla for a bag of day-old doughnuts, but I blanche at the thought of having to pay a guy to play for someone else (like we did with Lowe). Believe me, I'm not enamored with the prospect of paying BJ Upton tons of coin to be a 4th OF. Truthfully, I think Upton could stage a reversal of some sort, but both he and Uggla looked totally lost outside of Uggla's stellar June and decent July.

Don't know what to do about 2nd in Uggla's absence. I don't know what Pastornicky's recovery timetable is and I don't know if he's the answer even if healthy. Pena could contribute as well. We should probably look for a 3B/2B utility guy just in case, preferably a LHH (which Pena pretty much is if healthy). The problem here--and I say this as someone who deplores Uggla--is that if you don't acquire a significant upgrade (which won't be someone off the scrap heap), you may be better off just playing Uggla because if you trade him, he'll be going with a nice size wad of cash in his pocket to be delivered to his new employer. It then becomes a budget issue as much as a performance issue. Trading Uggla might be difficult before spring training at any rate, because anyone who may be interested is going to want to watch him play against live pitching before gauging their interest. And please, no one compare Uggla to Adam Dunn. I'm no Moneyball guy, but Dan Uggla wishes he could be Adam Dunn. Dunn has had five seasons of OPS > .900. Uggla has been over .850 twice. And don't give me the "But Uggla plays 2B and he has been one of the most productive at that position." Bull. Uggla plays "bat" and stands at 2B when playing the field.

I worry a little about the bullpen. Walden is obviously hurting and I don't know if I want to go into next season depending heavily on Ayala and Carpenter. Both had good years, but watching Ayala is like watching a semi-truck drive over a newly-frozen lake. He "might" make it to the other side.

I'm guessing McCann is gone with Gattis taking over at C with Laird as the back-up. I don't know how I feel about that, but it's likely what will happen.

So, big off-season. Not a lot of decisions to be made, but a couple of fairly high-profile ones.

Why do people act like three solid games means more than two years of suck?

Because 3 solid games coming in the last 2-3 weeks is meaningful.

Medlen was 5-0 before the playoffs with an absurd ERA and look how that worked for us.

I think it's pretty obvious Medlen shouldn't start on 3 days of rest after getting shelled in Game 1. Garcia or Wood were the only 2 options for a Game 4, and the choice was made long ago to put Wood in the BP. Wood has been battered by the Dodgers too, so it's not like he is a great choice right now either.

We all knew going into this series that the Dodgers had a significant pitching advantage. The only chance the Braves ever really had was to squeak out wins with timely hits and an excellent performance from one of the young guns. So far, they've only gotten that in Game 2, so I'm not sure why everyone is surprised at how the series has unfolded.

No it's not obvious Medlen should start on three days of rest. Medlen was terrible in game one and true Garcia isn't ideal, but it feel like he gives us as good a shot as any. Let's be honest, Kris Medlen is a number three, period. There is no way coming off 3 days rest, Kershaw is 100% tonight we will have an opportunity or two.

I honestly don't think the three days rest will affect Kershaw that much. Worst he'd do is maybe 3 runs or so, which is realistically the best we could expect from Garcia against their lineup. Our best bet is just to get it to the bullpens either tied or maybe with a 1-run lead.

Does anyone think there is a possibility of the Braves doing a Bobby Bonilla type deal with Uggla if it comes to releasing him. $1M per year for 26 years no interest.
Could probably pay that out of the concession till.

I read a lot if teams forumns and uf there is one thing that I have learned its that every team would make the world series if they fired their manager.

I don't think it's a given Uggla is not our 2b next year. I'd try to do something but Cano is not coming here and how many other 2b hit 20 bombs a year. It's a safe bet IMO Uggla is in camp next year provided he's not too p---ed off.

How safe you think that bet is (what odds you give) and maybe ill take you up.

You want specific names?

Well, the first thing I would do is phone Mr. Terry Ryan in the Land of 10,000 lakes because he covets players like Chris Johnson and see if I can pry Miguel Sano from him. There's your 3B and can you guys imagine what an IF with Simmons and Sano would look like for the next 5-10 years? My head nearly explodes from the possibility.

Ryan seems to have gotten dementia since he returned to the GM chair in Minnesota, but if he made a deal like this, the pounding you'd hear in the distance would be gallows being built to hang him. I wouldn't mind taking a look at Trevor Plouffe, who has really fallen out of favor. Could be a good 350 AB guy playing some 3B, 2B, 1B, and corner OFs. Has some power.

I agree with others expressing the possibility that Uggla will be the 2B going into next season, but what gives him the right to be p*ssed at management? The guy flat out stunk up the joint this year. I agree that a deal for him would likely have to wait until spring training because I doubt anyone will want to acquire him until they've seen whether or not he needs a white cane to make his way to the plate (and that limits the team's flexibility) . I know that some in here still like the guy, but I get the feeling that any time that Wren mulls over a possible expensive signing, he should really think more deeply. I'm not Nostrodamus, but I DID see this coming and I'll admit I'm not right that often.

Pretty safe. But, I don't gamble. We are gonna have to pay him anyway, I would not just cut him loose. We have no leverage to deal from plus I would not doubt once he leaves Atlanta he will bounce back a little ala McClouth.
