Impeachment

I wonder if they realize that Trump and Republicans are making the case for why the next Democratic President can charge Trump for his federal crimes once he is out of office. They literally are saying the President has a constitutional duty to fight corruption. The more the defend Trump the more they are hanging him when he gets out of office.

The President can probably pardon himself. There doesn't seem to be anything restricting the pardon power in that regard. I would not be surprised if Trump tried that on his last day in office.

I think that one has yet to be decided. I have no idea how a court will rule. Powers of pardon are not absolute. They can't be exercised in a corrupt way.

It is something of an open question. Article II states the President "shall have power to grant reprieves and pardons for offenses against the United States, except in cases of impeachment." That's pretty expansive.

Judge Richard Posner stated "It has generally been inferred from the breadth of the constitutional language that the president can indeed pardon himself". So while there are arguments you can make against the President's power to pardon himself, I'm going to side with Posner and say the President likely has that power.

That being said, I'd be in favor of a Constitutional amendment stripping the President of the power to pardon himself.

One thing I want to see after this (and know that realistically, I will not see, because it would require an amendment or someone proving standing to get it to SCOTUS): A codification of law regarding some of these very hotly debated topics, such as what limits if any, exist on the power of the pardon, and to what extent the President is and is not immune from prosecution. Ken Starr, for one, believed that he could in fact indict a President, but chose not to press the issue.

Courts will not rule on these things until they are ripe for decisions.

Now that Pompeo is by reports ready to resign and publicly humiliated by Trump, what else does he know ?
What else does Rick Perry know?
What else does Rudy know ?
Why is Russia still coming up ?
Is this just the tip of the iceberg ?

Ken Starr advising Senators to approach Trump with a Nixon ultimatum.

A lot has happened since 9:55 AM this morning

and when does Ivanka come up ?

Not prone to advising (R) on political strategy --- but if a resignation is impossible I cant see how they dont cut bait with Trump

Have we established whether a sitting Prez can be charged with a crime? It was my understanding that he cannot. So he can't pardon himself from a crime he hasn't been yet charged of.

You don't need there to be charged for a pardon. Nixon was pardoned without any charges being filed.

The President has the power to pardon offenses. So it arises when the offense occurs, not when charges are brought.

So Parnas apparently had a working relationship with Nunes.

Yep. No conflict of interest there having the ranking member of the minority party spew out those garbage soundbytes.

So Nunes knows 100% that the Ukraine conspiracy theory is bunk. Maybe Schiff should send Nunes a subpoena.

The questions I want to see asked.

"If Trump was legitimately concerned about corruption in Ukraine could he not have asked for an investigation without a public notice so as to protect any impact on the election unless actual evidence of criminal actions were found?"

"Given how corrupt the legal system and the prosecutors office has been in Ukraine, do you believe that an investigation into the Bidens would be done fairly?"

"Do you believe Trump would retaliate against Ukraine if they did not find any criminal wrongdoing in their investigation and do you believe Zelenksy was aware of this. And how would that likely affect the outcome of the investigation"

"Does Ivanka Trump receiving trademarks in China the day after she meets with the President of China has the appearance of corruption?"

"Jared Kushner famously made one of the worst real estate deals in history, after Trump became President it was reported that Jared tried to get Qatar to buy it. When they refused the US blockaded them out of nowhere. Later Kushner sold a 99 year lease to a company partially owned by Qatar for 1 billion dollars all money up front. Does that have the appearance of corruption?"

"Do you think someone who has a constitutional duty to root out corruption would ignore these appearances of corruption without a full and transparent investigation?"

Also, I want to be crystal clear, I am not smoking weed right now. Never have. Never will. You are now all my witnesses in case of future legal trouble.

Nunes: "THIS WHOLE CHARADE IS A HOAX. WHERE IS THE WHISTLEBLOWER? WHERE IS THE DNC SERVER? HILLARY COLLUDED WITH UKRAINE TO LOSE HER OWN ELECTION. EVERYONE KNOWS IT. THIS WHOLE CIRCUS IS A SHAM AND YOU KNOW IT AND I KNOW IT"

voice: "sir, this is a Wendy's drive-thru"

I'm sure the people Parnas arranged for Nunes to meet in the Ukraine were of the uncorrupted crowd.
