Implications of the Trade

Agree 100%. Like I said I'm trying to live in a world where this trade happened.

If Olivera is a steal at this price and we back it up by landing more talent around around him, then we start to get somewhere. I don't have to like the trade.

Let's just say Wood is a 4 war player for the next 4 years. Olivera is what? Can the Braves make up for that lost 16 WAR by using that money to sign a big FA or two that could get us closer to 20 WAR over 4?

But the thing is, even under that rationale, having Wood doesn't keep us from signing the same free agents. It means we don't have Olivera, obviously, but Wood is not more expensive than Olivera. So it's really just a straight comparison of Wood/Peraza to Olivera and the value they'll bring.

This is the offseason to make a splash in FA if they are going to do it since their pick will almost certainly be protected. Sign Gordon for LF, sign the best SP they can, sign the best catcher they can without going crazy. By the time Jace hits arb he will be replaced by Albies.

Markakis RF

Maybin CF

Freeman 1B

Olivera 3B

Gordon LF

Catcher

Jace 2B

Simmons SS

Miller

Teheran

Wisler

FA

Folty/Perez/ManBan/whoever

Yeah, that team is fine, but considering the money we have to spend, if we go get Gordon, the catcher and SP won't be elite. So that team is still only decent.

Still no power.

I count 3 guys with 20 HR power (assuming Olivera is who they think he is). The only "real" power on the FA market is JUp, and I don't think the Braves want to pay $150M for his ups and downs.

Well, Alex Gordon has hit 20 homers twice in his 9 year career... and I don't think Olivera sniffs 20 HRs... mostly bc he won't play enough

Fair enough. But if that's the case, no thanks on paying him roughly $20 million/year. That would take most of our available money and would definitely mean we couldn't add much else.

I would much rather go get Heyward for $25.

I'd imagine Gordon will command about $15M-$18M over 5-6 years, but your point is well taken. The Braves are going to have to splurge on a bat at some point, the only question is who and how much.

I would be shocked if the Braves go after any of the aces on the market. I think Zimmerman or Kazmir is the absolute top of what we'll go after, and I think you'll see us in the mix for the Samardzija-Anderson-Morrow group and then try to add somebody like Fister or Billingsley cheap.

Prepare to be shocked

Who's the third? Not coming at you, just genuinely clueless.

It's clear what they want and it's big game stuff which is why we're gambling on so many arms and focusing on heat or devastating curveballs. I think we'll get another ace to pair with Miller atop the rotation and play next man up with the other 3.

I will again bring up his name but more so to ask if I'm thinking in the right rationale.

Ryan Braun.

He is on pace to put up the following numbers: .266 AVG, .335 OBP, .821 OPS and 121 OPS+ with 30 HR, 98 RBI, 90 R, and 23 SB

Now compare that to Justin Upton (yes I know their home parks are totally different that's why I put in OPS+): .249 AVG, .325 OBP, .760 OPS and 116 OPS+ with 28 HR, 88 RBI, 80 R, and 27 SB

Finally, here is a breakdown of Braun's contract from a yearly basis:

2016: $20 million
2017: $20 million
2018: $20 million
2019: $19 million
2020: $17 million
2021: $15 million mutual option with a $4 million buyout
TOTAL: $100 million guaranteed or $111 million if the option is picked up

So here are my three main questions:

1.) If he is someone that interest you, would you rather pick up all his salary to lessen the price we pay in prospects -OR- have Milwaukee send some money and therefore making us include more/better prospects?

2.) Is there a better bat available for less than what Braun makes (5 years / $100 million or $20 AAV) that would give us his production (currently a 1.9 WAR player)?

3.) What would it take to get him? (My opinion.. we send Sims/Whalen/Cunningham/Thurman to MIL for Braun/Knebel/$20 million) Totally MY opinion.

Anyone??

I would pay the full ride to lower the cost. Part of the Olivera sales pitch is we save a ton of money there to spend elsewhere.

I think it's possible we get Braun but probably only in a package deal for lucroy.

With markakis and Braun we'd have the corners locked up for a while but we have no help in sight in the minors.
