Implications of the Trade

I'm just wondering for the posters who say so and so isn't worth this much. By that do you mean the market won't pay him that much, or he isn't worth it based upon some objective criteria, or not worth it based upon what you feel.

Just because the market says he may be worth that doesnt mean he deserves it.

28 mil now is 16 mil 5-6 years ago, money is through the roof right now.

Best players in the game get paid 30 million these days.

Only like 3 players make 30+ mil a year.

I think only Stanton, Trout once his arb years run out, and Kershaw.

If you think Heyward is worth that, i got some retail to see you.

What would his WAR have been last year with average defense? fWAR had him at 5.2. There's no way most of that wasn't from his defense. He would not be top-20 WAR guy last year without great defense.

This is like saying what would Kershaw be without his fastball.

3.3 WAR if he had league average defense last year.

Brandon Crawford has the 4th highest WAR in the NL per ESPN.

Would you say hes been the 4th highest valuable player in the NL this year?

Again, most of Heyward's value comes on defense.

You said Cespedes was a better offensive player which is false. You point was inaccurate.

I think depending on the type of team you have either could be a better fit. I think Cespedes with his power would be better for the Braves actually.

And Cabrera. And nobody thinks Heyward is worth 30 million. Now you are just making things up. Heyward is a clear tier below those guys. The top tier players in baseball now make 30 million a year. Those below those players fall into the mid 20 million range. Heyward will likely end up in that area.

Actually if the market says he is worth X million then that's what he deserves. The market bears that out. Whether you think he or any player deserves that much playing a game is up to you. But his production puts him into a certain value range and that's what some team will give him. Therefore he deserves that much in this market.

Most likely, doesnt mean he's worth that.

Even still, both are good players and will get well paid this winter, i think Cespedes is a better fit for the Braves because of his power though.

So Markakis is worth 4/44, good to know.

And BJ Upton is worth 15 mil a year because the market says he is.

He's probably 2 tiers below them but thats another story.

Then what if he pulls a year like 2013 where he is more like Gattis? Sure he has that raw power but with his low walk rate and high (although not horrible) K rate he can be prone to some pretty down years. He will also be 30 to start the season. You have to figure Cespedes is going to want that long term deal as it will be his only real shot at one. And with that likely comes a horrible back end of the contract. That's the risk you get when signing 30+ year olds to long deals.

Oh, I wouldn't give Cespedes a long term deal. Just thinking aloud here honestly.

Heyward is having a really good season. I don't disagree that he could get somewhere between 22-25 AAV. He bet on himself and is going to come out looking great.

Doesn't change the fact that Heyward is pricing himself into the mid 20 million salary rise. That's where he is at with his current production.

He'll certainly be well paid by someone, does not mean he's worth it.

And what if he has years similar to 13-14, is he still worth 25-28 mil a year?

He has a good average, im just not sure you give someone essentially top dollar when they arent a middle of the order bat.

I dunno. Cespedes just seems like a big risk. If you could nail him down to a 3-4 year deal and possibly over pay in dollars per year then I wouldn't be against it. I just don't see him wanting that unless his market completely dries up which is unlikely.
