This government disinformation board sounds like the kind of thing that people on the Left would have freaked out about if Trump had done it, but in reality is fine if the scope is kept narrow enough. Social media is a goddamn cesspool, particularly internationally. Look at the Philippines and India as good examples for how social media can be used across a nation to drive some really bad disinformation, and it’s really not hard to imagine the wrong disinformation actually harming our national security, even if it’s indirectly.
Where I object is if it is used to limit free speech, particularly domestically. I cannot accept any action taken by the government that tells a social media company what to take down, or takes steps to limit what can be discussed. It might be overly naive to take the government at its word that it won’t do that, but I haven’t yet seen any evidence that suggests they are. Until they do, I can at least see the sense in knowing what is happening out there, whether the Left or Right is in charge of it. If either side crosses the line (which will probably happen, because this country sucks) then I’ll openly oppose it no matter which side is running it.
