Is Free Speech Under Attack in this Country?

I was also interested to see the reaction around here to Mark Zuckerberg's letter. To me this was an example of coercion and intimidation by politicians. The letter was clearly a response to pressure and an attempt to appease Jim Jordan and other House Republicans. I guess it is ok when (R) intimidate someone into giving them what they want. Not that Zuckerberg himself is a sympathetic figure. But he made a cynical calculation that they would leave him alone if he gave them some of what they wanted.

The last 5 years or so have been super helpful in understanding how much of the country is actively cheering for authoritarianism

Congress does have a right to investigate possible crimes and you have to comply with their investigations.

Why is it every time we show democrat wrongdoing every lib on here tries to outstupid each other with ridiculous whataboutisms?

I didn't say anything about Congress not having the right to investigate any of these things. I did make the observation that they used their power to intimidate Zuckerberg into giving them what they wanted.

Any comment on the contents of what Zuck said?

And lawful authorities don't normally do that? lol.

If you're a witness to a possible felony every single lawful authority on earth would intimidate you if you don't cooperate to help them.

Yes. The Supreme Court recently issued two important rulings in conjunction with these issues. I agree with both of these rulings. First, it ruled against a bid by a group of state attorneys general to prevent the federal government from contacting social media companies about their content. It seems common sense to me that this is permissible. What is and should not be permissible are threats such as regulatory and other actions that threaten the companies with harm if they don't comply. For example, a threat not to approve a merger. Interestingly enough this happened under the Trump administration in the AT&T-Time Warner deal. But none of our pro-liberty warriors around here seem to view that with any sense of alarm.

Secondly, the Supreme Court ruled against two states (Florida and Texas) that passed laws preventing social media companies from moderating their content. This also strikes me as common sense. The companies are custodians of their reputations and brands. Surely, it is within their rights to be able to ensure that their brand is synonymous with reliable information. Just as it is within their right to develop a brand and reputation for something less than reliable information. The public should be trusted with deciding for themselves where to turn for information.

I'm glad Elon Musk is pursuing the business model he has chosen. It will allow for a proliferation of competing approaches. It gives people yet more choices (they already had many) as to where to go to for information and entertainment.

She's a communist

The entire left has lost their minds. It's remarkable the amount of libs I saw on Twitter that were outraged when SCOTUS removed the ability of our bureaucracies to interpret law as they saw fit.

WTF is wrong with these people?

Low T people (women and soft men) want to be told what to do, want to be protected, and want to feel part of a herd, regardless of how stupid the herd is

I can't figure out why people vote for Trump. lol

The left continues to piss on the 1st Amendment.

Following Englands lead?

That’s a bold move

I believe this is from 2019.

It's the ugliness of the left's totalitarianism.

The arrogance of the left that they alone get to determine what's misinformation is mind-blowing.
