Is Free Speech Under Attack in this Country?

The Kanye disaster is a perfect example of why free speech should be absolute (blah blah blah yeah fire in a theatre exclusions...)

He is making an absolute fool of himself and the hate he spews makes people understand those viewpoints are not rationale.

Free speech for everyone. I hope Kanye continues to speak.

Absolutely insane. I’m not surprised Trump is incapable of sound judgment, but you would assume his handlers would have stepped in.

You can still speak to people that have disgusting views. Its not all who they are....

If you can't talk to people you disagree with then all we have is conflict.

Why would Donald put himself in that position?

The only window voters have into your character is words, deeds and associations. There is nothing to gain from meeting with Kanye. There is no excuse for his handlers not to intervene once Fuentes joined.

I agree on the later part once it was found out that it was a setup.

But I still vehemently disagree with the fact you can't speak to someone if they have some contemptable views. THats not the way to bring the world together.

Sure, but I think when you’re one of the 2 or 3 most influential people in the world today, you need to weigh that with the downside of giving someone saying things this bad an audience.

I’d be happy to take that back if it turns out Trump was trying to help Kanye see the error of his ways, but there’s not really any good evidence that was the case.

Not Could but should

Kanye is interested in whatever serves Kanye. He’s a stuntman and unpredictable. Trump put himself in that position for no reason.

I’ve never thought Donald was any more racist than your run of the mill 80 year old. I understand he didn’t meet with Kanye to give him a platform to spew hatred. It’s merely a sign of poor judgment.

Nobody needs to wonder what Trumps positions are on the Jewish people so any attempts to tie his association to Kanye as a view into Trumps inner thoughts is silly (not saying you are doing this).

Now would Trump meet with Kanye after he said "People should stop killing the Nazis"? I think he may have a different reaction moving forward but who knows.

Its obvious that Kanye is mentally ill and Trump views him as a friend (after this setup probably not). It could very well be that Trump felt welcoming him could end up helping Kanye.

I think it could be viewed as poor judgement. I think extending any future invitations after the nonsense that Kanye spewed today on the ALex Jones show would amplify your assessment.

I guess my point is ultimately that it’s a bit reckless to meet with someone espousing such garbage, because it lends a level of credibility to **** like this:

I don’t think it’s the case that Trump is intentionally trying to give a platform to anti-semitism. I just don’t think he’s being particularly responsible when he’s allowing a situation like this to even be possible.
 
Sure - Like I said, what he pulled today on the ALex Jones show should make think twice before future association. What he did today was at a new level.

But again, I still believe that even if a person has contemptable views they shouldn't just be pushed out of society as a whole. The best thing is to actually give them a microphone to make them look even worse.

Ultimately I guess my primary point of contention is how utterly unsurprising I found Kanye’s appearance today. If the “Nazis are actually good” statement had come entirely out of left field, I’d be more willing to give Trump the benefit of the doubt for his judgement.

I'm for free speech but Alex Jones should not be allowed on the airwaves. He makes money telling lies that hurt society.
 
I'm always baffled at the silence of the fake free speech absolutists when 'ye is oppressed, whether by the old twitter regime or the new one. A real free speech absolutist would speak up no matter how offensive the content or objectionable the character of the speaker.
