Jim Johnson

I'm thinking with Krol, Paco Rodgriguez, Minter, Marksberry and Akeel Morris they might be satisfied with the current group of internal options. Plus there are a couple starters--Newcomb and Madder--who could be moved to the pen at some point next year.

I think Krol will be here, although he had reverse splits in 2016. If Paco's healthy, that would be a big help. Agree that Minter gets a spring training invite and he may run with it. Not sure on Marksberry. His minor league splits against LHH have been killer the past two seasons, but he hasn't taken hold at the big league level yet. My guess is they would like to find a reliable LOOGY out of the batch or on the market.

Morris is a RHP.

So who gets the ball in the 9th next year. we should have 3 healthy closers. JJ, Viz, and Simmons. Also Maurico should be stronger and better. I guess there is the possibility that Viz gets traded this off season, but that would be selling him at a low point. It might be better to let him pitch the 1st half and then evaluate at the deadline. We might just be in a position to trade a BP guy and still have a wipe out pen.

I think Simmons viz winkler Cabrera paco jj and minter is a stud pen. Health a big question with half of those guys.

I doubt we see Paco, Winkler or Minter until at least June. But we will still have a very good pen and will get better as health improves.

Probably see some of those guys after braves sell smaller pieces at the deadline.

Not sure what Johnson's contract will be but at only two years it doesn't really matter.

Viz is the best option when he's healthy, but I'm wondering if he'll ever be healthy.

I know we said we're not worrying about the pen, but there are a lot of good arms in free agency this year. I think we'll make offers on a lot of them and see who would take our deal. This would allow us to have some flippable assets come July or even sooner if we chose to.

Not bad, but a smidge higher than I thought it would be. He stays healthy and he can play a lot of different roles.

Now that we know JJ's salary, I took a crack at where we stand on the budget. I used the MLBTR projections for the arb-eligible guys, and assumed we'd non-tender Recker and Withrow. Just to take a worst-case-scenario view of the budget, I listed Collmenter as the 5th SP instead of the pre-arb guys. There are two players with performance bonuses in their contracts (JJ and Flowers), so budgeted them to hit half their incentives. For players with signing bonuses, I pro-rate that $ over the guaranteed years of the deal. I have us currenlty at $80m with the following positions to fill: 2 SPs, 1 starting or platoon C, 1 backup IF, 1 backup OF. The FO is surely not going to spend money just because they have it, but I think we could have around $40m to spend this offseason ($120m budget) if they see fit.

I think it's likely we try to shop Markakis, would would add quite a bit to what we can spend. I still think we're more likely to spend big in a trade than in FA, though.

I've got us at $78,250,000 without renewals or arby raises, so that's probably pretty close. One thing I include is all bonuses anyone COULD earn, so I've got Johnson at $6,750,000 - IIRC, his deal called for $4.5 million in salary, $500 K worth of signing bonus (split for each year), and up to $1.75 million each year for games finished.

We'll spend about 40 million on a group of acquisitions that resemble this: Jason Castro, Andrew Cashner, Jorge de la Rosa, Kelly Johnson, Jeff Francoeur.

That will put us in the 80-85 range on the expected win curve.
