John Schuerholz on Braves Banter Podcast

Assuming health, it's not that hard to get to 80 wins on a pure WAR-driven basis. If you project something like this from the guys we have:

Freeman - 5
Inciarte - 3.5
Swanson - 3
Albies/Peterson - 2
Mallex - 2
Kemp - 1

Teheran - 4
Folly - 2
Wisler - 1

With those totals, you're sitting at 23.5 WAR, putting you around 71-72 wins. You need around 8-9 WAR at that point between 2 SP spots, 3B, C, your bullpen and your bench.

If you just add solid pieces at 3B, C, and SP, you're basically there.

I think you are probably on the right path, though I think Mallex is more of a 3 WAR guy. I would prefer to see something like this:

Freeman - 5
Baez - 4 (Inciarte trade)
Swanson - 3
Albies/Peterson - 2
Mallex - 2
Markakis - 2
Mac/Flowers - 2
Kemp - 1

Teheran - 4
Folly - 2
Wisler - 1

That's 27 WAR, or 75 wins. A decent 3/4 added to the rotation and the BP/bench kicking in a few WAR could quite possibly get this team to 80+ wins. At that point they are some luck and a nice trade deadline addition away from being a fringe WC contender.

I'm not sure why the Cubs would trade Baez for Inciarte.

Because their IF is set with Bryant, Russell, Zobrist and Rizzo, while they won't have a CFer next year if they let Fowler walk. They have Happ in the minors who could come in and replace Baez as their utility guy. Inciarte for Baez would be close to an even swap, and we know the Cubs may value defense the most highly of any MLB club.

It might also be possible to pry Bregman away from the Astros now that they have Gurriel playing 3B next to Correa and Altuve on the IF. They have a terrible OF other than Springer, and Inciarte would be a good starting point in a package for Bregman.

The A's are another team with a need in CF, and they have a kid named Berreto that would slot in nicely at 3B long term.

The Rays might be ready to deal Longoria, and one of Mallex or Inciarte might be a good centerpiece of a package to bring him to Atlanta. I have a harder time seeing the Rays and Braves lining up on a trade though.

I would be very surprised if Mallex and Inciarte are both in the Braves OF on opening day 2017. They both are too valuable as starting caliber CFers to waste in a corner spot, and the Braves would be wise to cash one of them in for a player at another position of need.

You've made a case for Baez, but Maddon loves him. And I feel confident they'll move Heyward over if Fowler goes.

Bregman is not happening. Period.

Also, hard pass on giving up Inciarte to get Longoria. Even Mallex.

Imagine the package it would take to get Longoria and Chris Archer.....not a big Longoria fan by any stretch of the imagination but that'd solve several issues for this team

I could see Baez possibly.. not likely IMO..

Stros would need more than Ender to give up Bregman..

not interested in Longoria personally. I like the youth movement we have.

Saying the Astros would need more than Ender to give up Bregman is kind of like saying I would need more than a calculator to play Mozart.

I would like to have Bregman but I don't see how the Braves and Astros match. IF the Braves were still in rebuilding mode, instead of pretend make-believe compete mode, I could see a trade of Freeman where Bregman is part of what comes back: Maybe something like: Freeman and Kemp (Braves pay most of salary and he DH's) for Bregman, Reed, Tucker, Gilberto Celestino and Fisher. That trade would give the Astros the cleanup hitter and LH masher they need and a RH DH coupled with Gourriel playing 3B. The Braves get a 3B, 1B, potential RF, CF, LF. Reed may not be the real deal at 1B long term, but if Bregman is the 3B of the now and future then Riley could move over. (before anyone says, hold your horses - I know the Braves aren't trading Freeman at this point).

Then go Teheran and Mallex to Colorado for CF Dahl, 1B/3B McMahon and C Tom Murphy.

Do a Folty & Markakis to NYY for McCann and RF Frazier.

2018 Opening Day something LIKE:

2B Albies
SS Swanson
3B Bregman
1B Reed
RF Frazier
LF Dahl
CF Inciarte

SP: Darvish (FA signee), Matt Moore (FA signee), Wisler, Newcomb, Allard

Swing and a miss.

Kemp just isn't going to interest anyone much, even if you're paying most of his salary. He doesn't add much of anything to that deal.

So you're essentially trading Freeman for that entire package. Freeman is great, but goodness. Bregman was the #1 prospect in baseball and is now playing like it at the major-league level. The Astros are likely not giving up him alone for Freeman, let alone the rest of that package.

I think Kemp helps the right team. This team. His marginal utility with the Astros would be negligible. If you dealt them 3-4 of those young starters, that might interest them.

They would most certainly give up Bregman for FF. He has proven he is legit hitter entering his prime. Bregman is riding a good year. he could just as easily fall off next year.

I also think Kemp adds good value to an AL team (like the Stros).. especially if he is very cheap. 30+ homers/100 RBIs are still valuable, regardless of what WAR says.

HH loves to make crazy trade ideas.. he has been doing it since I have joined. I don't think it is retarded to propose such trades even if they are lopsided either way. Just fans doing fanatical things.

I would be very, very surprised if they gave up Bregman for Freeman. I would be beyond shocked if they gave up Bregman and the rest of that package for Freeman.

If they would give up Bregman for Freeman, we need to do that yesterday.
