has got to be the most talented pitcher I have ever seen but lacks athletic mental toughness. He doesn't get a couple calls in the first and he melts like a candle. The Braves should trade him although not right now. I would wait until the winter meetings after we see if he can raise his value these last couple months.

The Braves and their extensions (like Shanks) built him up as the next great Atlanta ace as he was coming through the minors. That had more to do with the fact that the system really sucked than it did with reality. Teheran has always looked like a solid 3, marginal 2 since he has been up - stretches of excellence balanced by stretches of disaster.

If the Braves are smart they will nurse him along, get him back in a stretch of excellence then trade him for what they can get.

For 60 starts over two seasons the guy was a baller, averaging 200 innings of frontline stuff.

I don't know what's wrong with him, but neither do I understand giving up on him.
exactly. He was built up but no one complained when he was the one stopping losing streaks last year with Miller-like support. He may not be the ACE I thought he could be, but he's not devoid of talent as some suggest. No way I'd give up on him at this point.

He's still an ace at home. He just sucks on the road for whatever reason this year.

He does get rattled to easily, especially this year. Still think the they should hold onto him.

He has very good stuff. That means nothing if he constantly crumbles under adversity. He needs some counseling. I'm not ready to give up on him.

He got blown up twice last year. Twice in 33 starts. Those are some pretty short stretches of disaster.

The OP is not wrong. I think he would be a good trade candidate in the offseason even if he were pitching better. We need young controllable bats somehow and he's more replaceable than Miller or Wood. He will still have trade value this offseason even with the inconsistencies.

He has always outperformed his underlying peripherals... I think he's talented, but he is not and has never been an ace

I have no idea what's wrong with him, but to blame it on lacking mental toughness is strange, among many other things.

We have a board member, who insisted that Wisler sucks after just 2 major league starts. Let's ask him what he thinks.

I think he's a good pitcher, but his stuff has looked pretty lazy this year. He's not lazy, but a lot of his pitches are coming up to the plate with "launch me" written on them. Trouble is, his pitches have been so mushy that the hitters can actually read the writing. He has to be aggressive to be effective and from what I've seen this year, he hasn't been.

I wouldn't trade Julio, at least yet anyways. The guy is talented and has a chance to be a very good top of the rotation type starter, but he needs help in the form of psychology. He has good stuff but he melts like butter when the limelights are on. That start against LA in the playoffs 2 years ago may have been the worst start I have ever seen in the postseason. Yes, I've seen pitchers get shelled including our own HOFer's like Maddux and Glavine, but their's was explainable, for whatever reason on that given day they just didn't have it, but Julio had good stuff and had run support but he just wasn't there, at all.

As an organization, we need to send this guy to a psychologist much like we did with Smoltz to see if the lightbulb in there can be turned on. If it can, we got a pretty darn good pitcher. If not, continue to expect the same, a good pitcher that just can't be relyed on in the biggest of games. If we as an organization are serious about putting a serious contender on the field in the future, determining Julio's status in this way is paramount in determining how far we go. If not, probably best to just cut ties. But if we do, we should let him rebound and build value. I don't think he's done, I don't think there is a serious injury issue there with the knee, but I do believe there is an underlying problem with his mentality. And unfortunately, our manager isn't the best at inspiring confidence for someone that is easily shaken as Julio is.

Is he an ace, that's yet to be determined. The guy was very good the previous 2 years, and was a stopper at a very young age. Can he take the next step, yes, but will he I don't know. That's something that the higher ups in the organization must determine whether or not Julio's best value is to be a contributor on our team or on someone else's and used as an asset to acquire something at a position of need, especially considering our pitching depth.

Unfortunately, unrealistic expecations we're placed on this kid at a young age, with the comparison's to Pedro Martinez. Pedro was a once in a lifetime pitcher. Julio has a chance to pave his own way, but he's not Pedro, he's not that type of pitcher. In fact, the first time I saw him he reminds me more of Pedro's brother, Ramon, and quite frankly, there is nothing wrong with that but to some that won't be enough.

It's a control/command issue with Teheran. I think he's been a bit unlucky with his HR/FB ratio as well. Walking more guys and giving up more bombs. Not a good mix.

I have reason to believe that there's no reason to believe that Julio can't regain his command.

Probably just a slight mechanical thing that's throwing him off.

I think you're right, Weso. He's not off much. He's floating stuff he was burying.

Trading him now would be selling low.

Just your standard run of the mill Braves outrageous attrition rate for pitchers. At this point no one should be shocked.

I kid, but I'm kinda serious.

This thread is pathetic.

Its a legit thread Professor. Might not be one you agree with but it is legit. Right now, would you want him on the mound in a game you had to win? Not this year's version I wouldn't. And since we are now in full on rebuild mode why not??? He is at best a three. So why not wait until the winter and get two solid offensive prospects or maybe an everyday 3b?
