Justin Upton and Texas

Am I the only one who thinks an at minimum .800 OPS hitter isn't a bad guy to have on your roster, especially one who isn't overpaid and has a chance to give you a .900 OPS in a good year? Especially when you have a dearth of quality right handed bats thanks to Uggla and BJ struggling.

What has Upton ever done to be considered an MVP type hitter?

He had a .900 OPS one year in Arizona with over 20 SB. That was the point when folks thought he could win an MVP one year. And he was absolutely the MVP of my fantasy team that year.

I don't think that we should just dump UPton to get rid of him. Just like anyone else the Braves should always keep their ears open and see what teams are willing to offer. If nothing is worth it then you just stick with Upton and his hopefull potential.

Who are you going to get for Upton that is better than Upton? Is there evidence that Profar is going to better than Upton? These Texas Ranger prospects... I'm weary of them. I think at best Profar could hit as well as Upton is hitting right now.

I agree with that. The problem being that Justin is going to be making 14+ million next year.

Off topic for a moment but question: Bowman or DOB are saying that Braves will unquestionably make a qualifying offer to McCann. Dont know why but just one more thing. Question is if McCann accepts then can Braves trade him?

Nothing wrong with having Mac back at 1 year 14 million. Its the future years that make me not want to bring Mac back.

The Braves would be stupid to not offer Mac arby.

I don't think payroll is a problem the next couple of years though. We need to win the East these next two years. We have a two year window to get this thing done before who knows what's going to happen. We have a very solid roster for at least the next two seasons. I don't like the idea of trading very good players for prospects considering where the team is at right now.

you are not alone

Justin just hit 27 HRs and put up an OPS of 818 at the ripe old age of 25 in his first year with a new club. He put up absolutely monster months in April and August.

He also played much worse defense than I expected, pretty much stopped stealing bases, had a terrible May/June, and only a mediocre July/September.

Is he maddeningly streaky with a long swing that he never adjusts during an AB, even with 2 strikes? Yes. If that weren't the case the DBacks would have never traded him.

However, I think it should be very apparent why folks think he can be a strong MVP candidate in the future if he ever gains some consistency. He is the one player most likely to carry this team for weeks at a time, which he has already done.

I'm definitely not saying we should trade Justin. We would be foolish to. But there's no question we did not get close to the production that we traded for. He was a disappointment this year.

When Justin was hitting in April and the end of July/August....we had two streaks totaling 24-0. That was our season right there. It sucks that he's cold much more often than he's hot but when he's hot, we don't lose. He could almost single handily win you a world series if he gets hot in October.

Oh I dunno, got voted 4th in the MVP race in 2011? Does that not count?

I guess not. Not hard to see how Justin could easily be an MVP any given season. The only knock on Justin is just consistency, but I hope hes a Brave for a long long time.

He was ice cold much more often than he was hot this year. And he looked awful in the playoffs. His power totally disappears for months.
