Kimbrel/Melvin Trade Thread

Wagner did a great job, but your point still stands. Good trade on paper, but I think it'll hurt the 2017 team. More than it helps? That's the question.

I understand getting rid of Melvin money.... But not at the cost of Kimbrel.... I guess the Braves think closers like that just grow on trees...

I mean, the luxury of knowing the game is OVER if you're ahead in the 9th.... Oh, the Braves don't know what they're gonna be missing in a few years. I'd understand more if he was a bit older. But he'll still be good in a few years.... Idk, just didn't think it was worth it

It wasn't just Kimbrel/Upton for cash. We got a damn nice return, too.

Maybin should play CF and EY can platoon with Gomes...

vs righties:

1. Peterson

2. Maybin

3. Markakis

4. Freeman

5. Callaspo

6. Simmons

7. Bethancourt

8. EY Jr.

vs lefties

1. Peterson

2. Maybin

3. Markakis

4. Freeman

5. Gomes

6. Johnson

7. Simmons

8. Bethancourt

I think I'm just gonna watch the innings where the other team bats this year.

Dominant relievers actually aren't that difficult to come across. Braves will probably stumble across a couple of them in their own system. Simmons certainly being a possibility if he gets healthy. Kimbrel was among the elite of the elite, but it's kind of crazy just how many dominant late inning relievers there are these days. Considering that fact, it doesn't make sense for a mid market team to spend a bunch of money on a closer.

The Braves have had huge problems in the past with this, and I do expect it to be a problem in the future, unfortunately.

There's late inning... And then there's the 9th.... You ever notice how some 7th and 8th inning relievers are so good and then the team tries to make them a closer and they're not as good? Because of the adrenaline of finishing up and trying to lock down a win? Idk, it might work out. RIGHT NOW, just not so sure it doesn't hurt us in the future as much as it helped getting rid of Melvin's money

It's questionable whether the money offsets losing Kimbrel. I think it doesn't, and I would hate the trade if that was the end of it. But we got more than money, especially when you consider a handful more losses in 2015 and 2016 to bump our draft slot.

It was a lot different in the pre Kimbrel days though. Now there are so many dominant late inning relievers. We likely won't find another Kimbrel, but just finding a middle of the road closer is good enough. Take a look around the bigs and pick out the 15th best closer in the league, and I bet you that you'll be surprised how good he is.

There's no good reason why Cameron Maybin shouldn't start pretty much every day for us, as much as he's getting payed we need to see what we have. Plus this way we have a defense for our pitchers too as EYJ is good in left and Maybin is a true CFer too.

I understand people disliking this trade. I personally don't like trading one of the best closers ever. I don't understand people thinking this wasn't the right trade or a good trade. This is the best prospect we have got this offseason, along with another high ceiling OF prospect( which is something we are definitely short on) AND a high draf pick in a deep draft. This upcoming draft could pay huge dividends for years!

Damn this one hurts, kimbrel was an all time favorite. I've said it many times before and I'll say it again, despite the belief that late inning dominant relievers are easily replaceable, you don't trade a guy like Kimbrel. They're hard to replace. The Yanks dynasty doesn't happen without Mo. I realize we're gonna be bad the next few seasons and that diminishes Kimbrels value to the team in the short term, but in the long-run he's someone you build and plan around if were serious about putting a legit contender on the team.

Melvin, BJ, whatever his name needed to go but not at the expense of trading another key core cog in Kimbrel. That guy just might be my least favorite Brave ever right up there with Melky. But even Melky didn't almost single handedly ruin the organization like Melvin did. What a good job Wren did.

And I've been on board with the rebuild but I don't like this one. After watching all those dominant teams in the 90s struggle to close out key games you can't replace a potential HOF closer. There is just something about having a guy that you know when he comes in it's over. And Kimbrel not only did that but he made it look easy, toyed with hitters like he was playing a video game. This is the same FO that thought they could replace Smoltz with Kolb, see how that worked out?

Oh well, on to the next order of business. Hopefully Hart and Co are compiling a list for the next manager. Any suggestions?

There's a certain kind of joy that comes from knowing your team has a lights-out closer. And I don't think we've ever had a pitcher that made me laugh in disbelief more often than Kimbrel. Major League hitters should not look as bad as they routinely did against Craig- check out Ian Desmond's batting line against Kimbrel next time you get a chance, then look at the contract Desmond will get this off-season.

Thanks for all the good times, Craig. Enjoy Petco.

Couldn't agree more - he was very entertaining to watch and I'll be disappointed each and every time the 9th inning rolls around this year and Kimbrel isn't the one to emerge from the pen. Easily my favorite current Brave

Regarding Maybin, there's no reason the OF shouldnt be EY/Gomes platoon in LF, Maybin in CF, and Markakis in RF.
