Kimbrel/Melvin Trade Thread

Fredi said Maybin isn't starting in CF:

Fredi says Maybin will see some time vs. left-handed starters and be used as a late-inning def. replacement, which would shift EY to left

I think we should consider moving Hursh to the pen soon. I believe in him as a mid to back end of the rotation SP potentially but he really needs to develop his secondary pitchers. Right now he's a power arm with two potential plus pitches as a reliever. He could be a long term back end of the bullpen arm.

I think we need to not overreact here. If Maybin produces, he will play himself onto the field.

The best place to develop a feel for secondary pitches isn't in one inning stints IMO.

That's dumb. Play your talent Fredi! See if he can bounce back. You need to find out about him this year.

Bounce back from what??? Maybin has never been a good hitter. In his best season (2011), hit 9 homeruns and struckout 125 times. .323 OBP and .716 OPS. His last 3 seasons have been horrid. .297 OBP and .633 OPS.

I want to find out if he can hit while not playing most of his games in SD. He was a pretty good prospect. I'd rather find out about him than Young (and I like Young more than most)

Maybin likely doesn't hit much, but he has been in SD so there is at least hope he can improve on that a little bit.

Right. Nobody expects Maybin to become anything but he's a hell of a lot more talented then EY. We're rebuilding....take a shot on a still relatively young former top prospect and see what you have while he's on the team.

I understand trying to find something to be optimistic about amidst all of the recent happenings. But park factors are not why Maybin has struggled hitting. That might be the reason he hasn't hit 2 or 3 more homers per season, but there is still a lot of green grass out there to line some hits into if he was a good hitter.

The factors would be (in no particular order): park, injury, suspension.

The Padres thought highly enough of him to sign him to a 5 year contract several years ago, basically making him one of the faces of their franchise.

Plus defender, with 40 SB wheels ...

He's only 28 (literally just turned two days ago).

There's plenty to be optimistic about here.

I don't think anyone said park factors are the reason he can't hit. Just that there is hope that getting out of SD can help his hitting.

Take it a step further. Of recent WS-winning teams, who were their closers? Nobody who was was even in the same area code as the names you mentioned. Not that it's recommended that to attempt it with McMichael, Ligtenberg, Cather or Clontz...

I think that's a little misleading. All the WS winners of recent still had good-great closers. Giants had Wilson/Romo/ Casillas during their WS years. All were terrific closers during the course of their WS runs. Sox had Paps the 1st two WS runs and then had Uehara the last time in 2013. Phillies had Lidge in 2008. Even the Cards had stability at the closers role, though their closers were much less heralded. Cards and Giants of recent are probably your best argument.

Now among these guys, I would definitely say Paps, Lidge, Uehera, and even Wilson reached elite status as closers, if only briefly. And all of them were still pitching at an elite level when their teams won the WS.

As to whether the Pads already had a reliable closer on hand, who knows? But they certainly do now.
