Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

When was this? Are we thinking there's still 9 million for us?

To state the obvious, it was before Jan. 20th. In regards to whether there is still 9 million remaining, we signed Ozuna in Feb which tied up a good chunk of our payroll. While we've reportedly still been in on other relievers during this time, I doubt it's anyone that we would pay anything remotely close to 9 million. I doubt we have 9 million remaining before the season starts. We likely have around 4-5 million if AA finds someone that is a fit

Thanks.

Snitker on Kyle Wright being sent to AAA.

“This is an opportunity for him to go down and stay regular”

I guess Gwinnett will have lots of Activia in the locker room to assist. This explains a lot. Hard to pitch consistently when you have the runs one day and constipated the next.

Bowman interviewed Freeman today. Not sure what AA is trying to do here....

Freeman: I just saw Lance McCullers got his extension and I’ve been seeing the reports about Juan Soto, Trea Turner and other guys in the NL East. I’m happy for them. They deserve it. They are such amazing ballplayers. But in my case, we haven’t been approached yet, my agents or I. We’ve got a week left before the season. My main focus is getting ready for the season next and being ready for April 1 in Philadelphia and getting to the World Series. That’s my main focus. But in terms of extension talks, we haven’t been approached yet.

Pretty sure Freddie's extension will be announced during the first couple weeks of the regular season - AA's kinda busy trying to put the team Freeman will be playing for in 2021 together at the moment.

Given how much of a liking for Ynoa Snitker's come to have, I kinda wonder if it's worth thinking they just might cut Tomlin so they can hang onto BOTH Jones and Edwards. It's hard to imagine anyone's going to be interested in a soft-tosser like Tomlin at this point, so they could probably re-sign him to a split deal (he's probably not interested in going somewhere else anyway) and tuck him away in Gwinnett as an extra Pitching Coach to work on control/command with Wright, Newk, and Touki.

“I’m too busy to talk to the reigning NL MVP about an extension” would definitely be, ummm, interesting.

"We haven't been approached yet" is GM-speak from a player. He knows what he would consider an insulting offer, and they know how much they have to spend and/or who else they're interested in locking up. Both sides know the range of numbers they're looking at, so not "approaching him yet" likely means they just haven't ironed-out final details - will the final year be a team option, how much will be a signing bonus, what types of award bonuses might he get? Both sides have openly said in the press that he wants to be here and they want him here. Freeman's been consulted every time there's been a big decision to make for the last several years - the thought that they haven't talked is more than a little funny.

Freddie knows how AA operates, and he's not going to talk about things in the press - AA doesn't. For all we know, AA may also be working on extensions for Fried, Soroka, and Dansby. Their agents will do the same thing we do if the figures being discussed were to leak, trying to figure out how much payroll flexibility may be there - they'll try to use them to leverage a better deal. DOB keeps mentioning something in the 5/$150 million range. We have no idea, but most feel like Freddie would take something that was team-friendly as long as it wasn't insulting. It's a good idea for him to "play dumb" because if he actually IS open to something like that, that's extra money they'll have to try and lock the other guys up.

I don't think anyone on here seriously believe that AA and Freeman's agent haven't had any conversations. Of course they have, and of course AA wants to keep things quiet. But you blaming no deal on AA trying to acquire bench pieces from the scrap heap was just funny.

The point is that some people will actually read that quote and honestly believe that the sides haven't talked. It was actually intended to be funny. There's no rush - Freddie's under contract for this season. AA can spend the next week sorting things out with the roster and it's not going to affect the Freeman negotiations in the slightest.

Betcha AA has been in touch - a deal for Tauchman and Dietrich would allow him to say "adios" to Camargo, Lamb, Almonte, Ervin, and Heredia. They would probably be one of the few teams with some interest in Newk.

I don't see why we would be particularly interested in either player for more than a song. Newk has his issues, but I'd rather not trade him for 2 guys that the Yankees might end up cutting anyways. We had the chance to pick up Dietrick for a minor league contract already and we passed.
