For that amount, it's probably not the worst thing. No more playing time than our backup SS gets have him fill that role while playing in Riley's place once in a while - he's a better bat than Hechavarria/etc., and if we get to a point where you're particularly worried about the backup SS's defense because Dansby's going to miss significant time you're probably looking at a Shewmake call-up anyway.

This move at least makes it reasonable to wonder if the vast majority of what AA has left to spend is going to be dedicated to bringing back Ozuna or bringing Bryant or Cruz in. If Camargo is the Riley alternative/backup SS on the cheap, and you can get Rosario or Mazara to platoon with Duvall in the $5 million range, there's probably enough left to add one of the three big bats to be the DH and hit behind Freeman.

More surprised to see Dayton kept with all the lefties we have available for the pen - turning him and Jackson loose would've paid a big chunk of what could have been given to Melancon or Greene.
 
Rosario/Duvall platoon would be a really nice upgrade over Markakis/Duvall. It’s also short term enough to not block Pache/Waters.

We still would need to replace Ozuna and sign a bullpen arm or two, but this team is pretty close to complete.
 
So would a team be able to platoon both center and LF. Seeing we are stuck with Ender. Platoon him and Pache and then another guy for Duvall. Seems like you might be taking too many spots on 25 man for the outfield.
 
Would imagine we could add Brian Goodwin to the list of potential Duvall platoon-mates.

.250/.317/.451 career against RHPs, can play all 3 OF spots defensively - local guy (went to Carolina). Surprisingly good against lefties - would be great to have as a 4th OF and to platoon with Ender while they game Pache's clock.

No rumors linking it, but I have a strange feeling AA might make an out of left field move and sign someone like JTR.

The Mets had been heavily rumored to be involved, but sounds like they are not in on him. The Phillies seem like they do not have the money to sign him. The Blue Jays and Nationals have both been linked to him. But AA really seemed to want him before the Fish traded him to the Phillies. AA always plays things extremely close to the vest, so obviously there would be no mention of us being in on him.

If AA signs him, he becomes your Ozuna bat replacement. If the DH returns in the NL, then we can rotate that spot to give guys a day off or have a third catcher on the bench to allow TDA to DH....

Again, not rumors, just a feeling.

Nothing AA does really gets leaked but would be shocked if AA paid the contract JTR wants. He wants a Posey level deal or more, do not see AA giving that kinda money/years to a 30+ year old catcher.

Further, the Braves posted a 99 wRC+ in 2019 vs LHP, when they already had JD at MVP level and Albies posting a 1.100 OPS vs LHP.

The fact remains the Braves need to replace the JD/Ozuna bat in the lineup with someone approximating that level of production.

31 PAs against LHP when the total the team had was 486 isn't insignificant. My napkin math had the team OPS rising from 754 (14th in MLB) to 779 which would be 7th.

You also can’t say that a teams ops would only go up by what Ozzie versus whoever’s difference would be. Ozzie hitting a 1000 ops would also ripple down the lineup by adding pitches and stress(guys on base) to a starter. Not quantitative at all. But the impact is probably bigger than comparing two players abilities.
 
So if the DH sticks around and we have enough to keep Ozuna, whats the plan in left?

I’m not a huge Duvall guy, but if we can’t pay him somewhere between the $5-7 million I’ve seen him projected at, then why are we handing $11 million to Smyly?
