Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

Carl Edwards jr minor league contract not bad at all.

Really like the Edwards and Arano pickups personally. Actually makes it really easy to see Jackson and Dayton being cut loose unless they absolutely pitch their *sses off during camp. Now add one of Rosenthal, Melancon, or Greene on the cheap and the pen could be a huge strength again.

Kinda wonder if AA might take a page out of the Dodgers' handbook they gave him while he was there and sign one of Giles or Osuna to a 2 year deal and let them rehab with the Braves and be an option to close next season.

Maybe they can be our designated hitter too. I mean they are probably better hitters than ender, Johan or Garlick.

I was checking to see when the Braves pitchers and catchers report and the dates have not been set yet. Braves are not the only team doing that. Pretty much every team in the league has not set their reporting dates.

I have a feeling that they are expecting a delayed spring training.

We haven't heard a word about Chapman from either the A's perspective or AA. Not sure if that's a good thing or not since AA has always been so tight lipped.

IMO, we either trade for Jose Ramirez or Chapman, or sign Ozuna or Turner. If one of those players isn't on the Braves OD roster in 2021 then this offseason has been an epic failure. Not only would we have not maximized the savings we're experiencing from Acuna and Albies deals, but we'll have wasted one of Freddie's prime years.

There is still time, but if we do nothing but sink 26 million into the starting rotation (Morton and Smyly), then it's hard to know wtf AA is doing. I understand signing one of them after last season, but both? Completely unnecessary. We were one win away from the World Series with a starting rotation of Fried, Anderson, Wright and a bunch of AAAA filler. We don't know when Soroka will come back and if he'll even be the same, but splurging on two pitchers this offseason screams like a 2009 overcorrection all over again. We didn't need to sign Lowe and KK but we did and the offense suffered mightily. Wren totally panicked after the 2008 season and overcompensated. AA is a much better GM, but with his aggressive nature of signing Morton and Smyly so quickly and doing nothing else for the team, it makes you wonder if he made the same mistake as Wren did? Hopefully AA has something up his sleeve, and I'll wait for final judgement, but sigh this offseason has been pretty frustrating.

Rosenthal said Oakland's supposedly not listening on Chapman...

"Despite those payroll concerns and the escalating prices of third baseman Matt Chapman and first baseman Matt Olson, the A’s aren’t discussing either of their corner infielders in trades, Rosenthal further reports. Chapman agreed to a $6.49MM deal for the upcoming season, while Olson will earn $5MM. Both sluggers figure to be in line for considerable raises next winter, however, and it’s an open question as to just how long the A’s can hang onto them. Oakland controls both through the 2023 season, but it’s not unreasonable to think that one or both sluggers could vault close to the eight-figure range in 2022 or even exceed that threshold (particularly in Chapman’s case)."

We are not getting Chapman. And I wonder with tribe signing Rosario signals JoRam is off the market. We are down to Over paying for Ozuna or Turner at this point.

The options are certainly dwindling, but Ozuna or Turner or Bryant or Cruz plus a LHH like Frazier plus a RHH like Duvall still makes this offense very good.

There is still hope!!

No thanks on Bryant. His regressing numbers scream avoid at all costs. Add in his 20 million price tag plus the prospects it would take to acquire him and I see absolutely no reason to go down that path.

We’re looking at Ozuna, Turner, or bust. As soon as one of them signs with someone other than the Braves, Braves nation is going to begin spiraling.

Bryant for negligible prospect capital works. Cruz as primary DH works. A Ramirez trade for quantity works. Even though I don’t agree with paying for a SS and then using him at 3b, a Story trade works. I bet there’s 1-2 trade options out there we haven’t discussed.

There are still quite a few options to acquire an impact bat. Declaring Ozuna and Turner as the only viable options is factually incorrect.

IMO if we want to see/talk about options other than the popular ones we need to look at contending or marginal teams (not the tankers) and consider those with pitching woes. The one thing available to AA is pitching depth and low salaries to boot.

As much as the move definitely helps the Cardinals’ offense, a lineup of Edman 2B - Goldy 1B - Arenado 3B - Carlson LF - DeJong SS - Fowler RF - Knizner C - Bader CF is pretty damn meh.

We can stop pretending we are trading for Bryant or JoRam. Both cubs and tribe have had recent signings that suggest they are keeping these guys for now unless you over pay by a lot. And we know AA will NOT over pay for anything.

So that leaves Cruz who won’t happen without a DH and Ozuna or Turner. Sure there are fringe guys like JBJ. Puig. Duvall with Frazier. But these options are also the only ones for other teams who might need fringe guys.

Bryant is a complete negative for us. His numbers are trash and continue to regress. He makes 20 million a year and he will cost prospects. Either we trade a decent haul to have them pick up the tab, or we give them nobody of consequence and then pay 20 million. Why not just sign someone for roughly the same amount money who will actually produce, and save the prospects, regardless of who they are?

We don’t have the dh in the nl currently and who knows what happens regarding the dh in the nl in the 2021 season. Signing Cruz is a huge gamble. If we don’t see the dh in the nl what do you do with him?

Story would work, but who are we giving up for him and how realistic is he? What will his numbers look like away from Coors?

In 300 home and road games this is what his numbers look like:

H
1285 pa, 1151 ab, 219 r, 350 h, 84 hr, 232 rbi, 32 sb, .304 avg, .370 obp, .624 slg, .994 ops

A
1256 pa, 1145 ab, 156 r, 286 h, 50 hr, 143 rbi, 48 sb, .250 avg, .315 obp, .445 slg, .760 ops

His numbers fall all of a cliff away from Coors and I’m not sure we want to burn the trade capital it will cost to acquire him. And if we trade away Dansby in the deal, we still have a glaring hole in the outfield.

Who is A Ramirez? I’m drawing a blank.

We could trade for JRam. That would be an ideal option. And yes, there are other trade options I’m sure we’re not thinking about, but free agent options are between Ozuna and Turner. The options are very, very limited overall.

Agree. I bet Arenado’s numbers slide quite a bit away from Coors.

You may want to review the history of players leaving coors field. “Reverse coors effect” is a well studied topic. They almost always produce at their career rates rather than their away splits.

worst trade in mlb history right? rockies pay $50Million for the Cards to take their hall of famer.
otherwise they would have paid him for a year before he opts out of the deal.

no prospects of note coming back either.

what in the world is going on in denver?
