Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

Why would the Reds trade Suarez? They just signed Doolittle, they're not dumping guys to rebuild, they're trying to compete. Forget that trade idea.

They lost Baurer and they've discussed Suarez and Gray with several teams.

Ozuna wanting 22-25M per and 4 years. Has it been so long ago that AA refused to meet that price for Donaldson along with his glove?

A 35 year old Donaldson is a whole other situation than a 30 year old Ozuna. Take into consideration the dh is coming in 2021, at worst 2022, and it’s a much more palatable deal.

Not sure they ever "discussed" Suarez with anybody - that was message board/Twitter-driven IIRC.

They were "listening" on Gray in the event they got a relatively strong MLB-ready SP package in return IIRC - they would've traded him for a Wright and Wilson type of return because Lodolo is all but ready and Antone looked good last summer and they could have spent the money they're paying Gray to try to land Didi. They don't have an MLB-quality SS on their roster or in their system.

Hector Gomez: According to @piodeportes Marcell Ozuna is seeking at least 4-year contract and $22-25 millions per season.

#Rays, #Braves and #Twins emerge as the frontrunners to sign the slugger.

This rumor makes no sense to me. Its laughable that the Ray's would even be mentioned. He'd literally take up half their payroll at that price. The Twins are better served just resigning Cruz for cheaper and less year. And the Braves would never go 4 years or match that price per season. If that's Ozuna's market he may wanna take another 1 year deal lol

So we have folks around here who think AA is going to give a bat-only player 4 years?

Hopefully by AA waiting Ozuna out, and teams who wanted Ozuna, like Minnesota, sign Cruz thus removing suitors for Ozuna and lowering his price. That’s the only way we end up signing him. I can’t see AA going more than 3/75 on him.

Yes and what happen if Dodgers jump to sign him?

I feel like the Braves comfort zone is more like 3/60

Then we're boned. Not my preferred choice. If it were up to me I would have signed Ozuna a while ago and then filled in the gaps such as the pen and bench.

We have 3 choices:

1. Sign Ozuna and cough up ~80 million dollars but save all of our prospects
2. Fork over a decent amount of prospects in order to acquire someone, and then have to pay them
3. Shop in the bargain aisle and piece together a meh lineup

Option 3 sucks because our entire lineup will most likely regress. Not only will the player/players we acquire for 3rd/lf be drop off offensively from Ozuna, but the lack of protection will negatively impact everyone else, especially Freddie.

AA may have to step out of his comfort zone. Use some of the excess money we saved from Acuna and Ozzie and kick it into this deal. The happy medium between my suggestion and what you think AA feels comfortable is 3/67.5. Does Ozuna take a 3 year deal at 22.5? Do the Braves feel comfortable giving the amount to him? I hope the answer is yes to both of those questions so we can be done with this saga and have our 2020 lineup back.

I can see it two ways.

1. Sign Ozuna and he plays in the field this year and then let Waters play next year when (hopefully the DH is back).

2. Trade for someone. We really need to make a trade at this point to clear some pitchers. There seem to be plenty of teams taking the quantity over quality route in trades.

I would go the Ozuna route and then make a trade for a few good bullpen arms under cheap control.

Our window is large, but the best team we are able to field might actually be in the next few years with Freddie still in his prime and the younger guys still making less.

This. All of this. Lol we need someone to copy, paste, and send this to AA.

If only the Braves had a GM smart enough to just throw money at Ozuna, or trade pitching for “someone”. Seems to me anyone can be a GM since it’s that easy.

I didn’t want to resign Donaldson. I “do” want to sign Ozuna back. The biggest reason?...I have a bad feeling he will sign with a team that we will have to compete against. We could go the route of upgrading 3rd and then signing someone like Puig. I would be “ok” with that also. I just don’t want to be “almost” good enough to win it all, and without some luck and guys outperforming....that’s where we are.

After this year we will likely have two of the three outfielders on rookie deals and another on a team friendly deal. Braves should be able to afford it.

Cruz back to the Twins on a 1 year deal 13 million

I never thought Cruz was an option for us without the dh, but this officially removes him from our list of possible bats. I also don't know the Twins finances, so who knows if this takes them out of the Ozuna sweepstakes. I would assume so. but I'm not 100% sure. Buxton and Kepler fill in their outfield and Cruz their dh. Who plays left for them now that Rosario is gone?

If the report from earlier has any weight to it, Ozuna's list of suitors is now down to two: Atlanta and Tampa.

And our list of free agent suitors is down to two: Turner and Ozuna.

I wonder if Cruz's 1/13 says anything about the type of money Ozuna will garner or not? Cruz is strictly a dh and is 40+ whereas Ozuna is 30 and can maybe play passable defense. Who knows.

C'mon AA, sign Ozuna!!
