Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

Did Joyce go from a middle of the order bat on a playoff (expanded playoffs in a short season but still) to a minor league deal? Woof. I thought he was in the 4/5 range for a while, but I'm pretty sure he was a starter for the Marlins.

I thought Joyce could be a fit for us.

Worth remembering we picked Joyce up off waivers at the end of spring training two years ago.

I know almost nothing about the players/prospects involved, but first glance is that it seems super light for Benintendi. I know his value isn't very high right now, but wow. I suppose the 3 players in the PTBNL portion of the deal could be of some value, though the Royals farm isn't super deep.

That’s been said about a lot of trades this year. It’s a good time to make a trade.

I don't understand the Mets involvement in this deal or why they needed to be included. Are they paying Benintendi's salary for the Royals?

Lee will be the second-best OF in their system, and Crow-Armstrong is a long way away. Only cost them Wincowski who couldn't be much.

Little deals like that help improve your system around the edges.

If Lee is there 2nd best then yikes. I don’t even know our system anymore and I bet we could find 3-4 better.

I can't complain too much as Ozuna, Morton and Smyly is a damn good offseason but I'm a bit perplexed by how long Alex is waiting to add the final few pieces to make a complete - and very robust - roster. There are thankfully quite a few pieces on the board so maybe he's just waiting for the right deal. Or maybe he's still looking into a big trade? I'm guessing not but it's just really weird.

patience grasshopper...roster construction is a year-round endeavor

Lee is a speed guy with a dicey hit tool but solid on-base skills. I've read that he projects as a 4th OF and if that's his floor, Mets have done alright here. Franchy Cordero is a bit of an odd player. He's shown some pop at the big league level in a very small sample size. Curious to see who the PTBNLs going to the Red Sox will end up being.
