Looking towards 2025

The good news is that upgrading at SS, in theory, should be very easy, since Arcia was the worst qualified hitter in the majors this year. I'm not so sure that signing Simba out of retirement wouldn't have resulted in a better offensive performance.

We can contend as long as we maintain a top 5 payroll like we have been and continue to develop prospects well (which we do). The Braves currently have only 104 million committed to 2027. And 91 million committed in 2028. That's a pretty good chunk of change to add talent (assuming we maintain payrolls near where they have been recently).

Braves 2025 luxury number is currently sitting at roughly $197.4M. The 3rd tax tier for 2025 is going to be $281M. I'm going to assume that's the number until something tells us otherwise because if that isn't the number there isn't much room to make additions.

The following options will almost certainly be picked up, and add to the cap number as (their buyout is already in the current cap number):

Ozuna: $15M
TDA: $8M
Bummer: $6M

Bringing the total 2025 number to $226.4M.

The projected arb salaries for the guys likely to be kept around are:

Laureano: $6.1M
Ynoa: $0.825M
Kelenic: $2.3M
Lee: $1.2M
White: $0.8M

Bringing the total 2025 number to $237.6M, leaving $43.4M in AAV to spend for 2025. They will leave some wiggle room for the deadline, so we are looking at somewhere in the range of $35M-$40M to spend this offseason.

The OF is fine. The BP is mostly fine. The bench is fine minus a real SS option. The rotation is 80% fine.

AA has

The biggest offseason need for this team is a better, more selective, more intelligent offensive approach. Make good plate discipline an organization-wide philosophy. Find guys who can instill such a philosophy. That obviously means a new hitting coach, but also guys at the lower levels that can teach this. Get rid of players who are beyond saving in this regard. And get Chipper back in the organization in some capacity.

I said more or less the same thing after the last two playoff exits. If all they’ll do is make some minor tweaks to the roster, I’m calling the same thing for 2025 right now. Despite all the talent, this offense is exploitable. First it was the Phillies, now most other teams have caught on. Obviously, longtime habits can‘t be fixed in one offseason, but they better get started.

No one is signing Bauer. If we were going to be signed, it would have been done by now.

He still admitted to most of what he was accused of. While it may have been a ploy to extort him, it's still reprehensible that he would be a willing participant in this behavior that ended up putting the poor woman in the hospital. And that is something organizations will have to sell to both the players and the fans. Bauer is done in the MLB, imo.

I think we can plan on the $280m vs the $230m

Braves will be in the market for a SP. I also think Laureano is pretty much a lock to bring back as well.

The top 2 SP in free agency are going to be Burnes and Fried. Over the last 3 years they are 9th and 18 in fWAR among SP at 11.8 and 10.1

They are 29 and 30 years old. Make no mistake. Fried will get paid despite this being his worst year since 2019.

I suspect the Braves will be looking at a Morton type SP deal. 1-2 years for a vet who won't break the bank but give you solid innings at the back of a rotation.

Snell is probably in that mix as well assuming he opts out, wont have a QO or Boras either. Dont think Braves will be in the mix for those 3 though.

Out of the box trade idea. Ozuna to AZ for Montgomery and Lawlar. Solves the SS and SP problem and frees up the DH spot for Soler and Acuña

We have 4 guys out of options that are hard to guarantee a major league roster spot to.

It’s too bad they’re all coming back from injury and don’t have much trade value.

Ian Anderson

Ray Kerr (L)

Huascar Ynoa

Angel Perdomo (L)

My guess is only Kerr is kept.

It's difficult for me to think they will be keeping Kerr as well. He is injured and won't be back until mid-2025 at the earliest and he didn't pitch all that well. I agree that the other guys you mention are not likely to be retained.
