It's OVER 5,000!
Lofton had a career BABIP of .326. But, he also had power. Gardner is at .323. And also has power.
Gardner did not have this power in the minors.
Lofton only hit 6 minor league HRs.

Ignoring the points that have already been made about fields/etc. do you assume since Lofton and Gardner did it, then Smith will?
Do you assume since Hamilton didn't that Smith won't?

Schafer hit .269/.378/.471 as a 21 year old in the same league that Mallex Smith just wrapped up hitting .340/.418/.413.
Other than those years from each, it's really difficult to compare the two because they played different levels/different leagues and Mallex was able to play in the lower minors in extreme hitters environments.
I think people forget how highly Jordan Schafer was thought of as a 21/22 year old. It's certainly higher than Mallex Smith at the same point.
Nope, just go by the info we have on him. Which he bunts a lot and slaps the ball to LF.
I don't really think you're comparing similar players (as hitters) given the power Jordan had flashed at that point, but there's little doubt many seem to have quickly forgotten how highly thought of and hyped Schafer was at his peak. Even after his suspension he was considered our answer in CF for the next 10 years.
That's not at all what I said.
But you can't just say "Gardner has power, Mallex doesn't." Because at the same stage, Gardner had equal power to what Mallex has now. Same with Lofton.
Mallex has hit 2 HRs this year in a non-hitter's league. That's Lofton's career high in the minors. Gardner's career high was 3, and he didn't hit a homer from high-A thru AA.
Overall, Smith's numbers compare favorably to both of those guys.
As long as he is getting on base at over a 350 clip at the major leagues I'm fine if he doesn'thit any home runs. He could be a dynamic lead off option.

Smith has 9 extra base hits on the year. If you don't consider that a concern, then sobeit.
IF that's your point, then don't argue he's Kenny Lofton or Brett Gardner.
Why does it keep getting ignored that he appears to be improving as he moves up levels? His Ks were down in AA compared to A+, which is huge to me. Walks around the same after a slow start in that area. BA up. wRC+ up. SLG down due to leagues, that's it.
Sounds a LOT like Otis Nixon. I'd be rather happy with that.
Lofton was a better comp for Schafer IMO - if I'm picking comps for Mallex, I'd lean more toward Otis/Vince Coleman.
If Mallex were a Nat prospect giles would be shining his nuts daily, citing the consistent improvement, ++ speed, and would use all the favorable comps (of which gardner and lofton, as far as numbers go, most certainly are).
I don't get it. All you can ask is that the player doesn't fall on his ass as he is promoted and Smith is not only getting by but appears to be getting better considering I'm reading boxscores.
