I wouldn’t go that far, since I doubt Beck ever amounts to anything; but I am pretty surprised that Anthopoulos is taking on the whole nut. Even if Melancon pitches as well next year as he has this year, he’ll only be worth about two-thirds of his salary; he’d have to return to his Pirates peak to meet or best his dollar-mark.

While every move and contract should be valued independently for value, it’s hard not to look at the surplus value from a Acuña and Albies and not be a little more okay with Melancon’s contract for the next year.

While we are complaining about paying Melancon 14 million next year we could be the Cubs and be paying Kimbrel 14 million per year for the next two. The same Kimbrel 8.01 FIP at -0.6 fWAR in 2019 who's also earning 14 million this year.
