Matt Olson to Braves!

The bigger question with Riley—if the team is serious about keeping a killer infield around for the next 7+ years—is what is reasonable to offer as an extension to him right now. I'd be hesitant, given his previous struggles, and the fact he's coming off a banner year; but, if you think even 80% of that performance is sustainable, now is the time to extent to maximize value.

I'm OK going year-to-year with Riley. He's surpassed my expectations at every step in his career, and kudos to him for that, but I don't see him aging well. Get as much production as you can from him in his cheap years, then move on.

MLB hasn't come out with its list yet.

He might be. Some might want to see him do it again to believe.

Deep position
1. Ramirez
2. Arenado
3. Devers
4. Machado
5. Moncada
6. Chapman
7. Rendon
8. Bryant?-is he 3B or OF
9. Bregman?
10. Mondesi-is he 3B?
11. Hayes?
12. Turner

Bohm......ha ha

I think Riley is after writing them out. Even if he regresses. No doubt if you include contract into the evaluation.

He's somewhere in the second half of those dudes. But we don't have him locked in for the better part of the next decade like the other three. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I mentioned earlier, that the lockout forbids teams to negotiate with players.

But does it forbid Anthopolous to negotiate with his Oakland counterpart to discuss a trade?

Maybe they discussed the trade during the lockout, had it set in motion if Freeman turned down the Braves final offer once spring training resumed. And then from there once the rules were clear, AA probably contacted Olson's agent (who I'm told was Chipper's agent), and said look here's the money we were gonna offer Freddie, would you rather have it?

Oh yeah! It was BB Abbott. He and Chipper went to elementary school together, not kidding. He's not a top dollar guy, necessarily, but he gets **** done. That's a big part of why it came together so quickly.

After the Braves acquired Olson – a move they made with the hope he would be their first baseman for a long time – Anthopoulos reached out to Olson. He welcomed Olson to Atlanta and told him his next call would be to his agent.
The Braves’ GM then called Abbott and told him: “We will come with a big offer, we will be very aggressive and we’d love to have something done by (Tuesday) at 1 (p.m.) if we can.”

AA playing no games. But being super polite like the Canadian he is.

Olson is an Atlanta native. His hometown team wanted to provide him with stability in both the money and location. He and his wife, Nicole, closed on a house inside the perimeter last August and got married in November. They talked over the Braves’ offer, with Abbott’s input.

“What’s to say no to here?” Olson said.

I thought this was interesting: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/braves-acquire-matt-olson-as-freeman-replacement-in-blockbuster-swap/

"ZiPS projects a $142 million deal over seven years as a reasonable offer to send to Olson’s camp, should the Braves want to close a deal quickly"

He signed for 8/168, or an extra year and $26M over the ZiPs suggestion.

This pretty much sums up why I'm not ecstatic about this deal, but I understand the other factors that likely went into it after Freeman walked.

Man Olson for 8 is pretty brilliant. Odds are he'll be regressing towards the end, but he still should be serviceable.

Even when he was "35" Pujols still was a productive 1B. Just no longer an MVP level player. If Olson basically leaves atlanta as a 2 WAR player, great. A+.

I agree, it's a bit of an overpay. But if you wait until you see what Freeman signs for that price probably goes up.

Man that's a great ****ing contract. 22 mil through his age 30-35 seasons plus an option for his age 36 season if he isnt declining a ton. That's insane value. AA does it again.

AA should Soler us next.

Certainly need an outfielder if Acuna is out til May. Anyone can guess to who since AA doesnt let anything out in the media.

We also have the option of moving him to DH to preserve his body so the grind of 1B doesn't tear at him too soon. Ozuna will be gone in a few years (hopefully sooner if we're lucky).

That seems like the ex-girlfriend who wanted to move on first but didn't.

I wouldn’t read too much into it. His pinned tweet his him holding a Braves bobble head.

I think this is fairly standard when players switch teams. He probably even has a social media account manager who does all this.

I do find it curious he would unfollow the Braves. Even players who were here briefly like Donaldson didn't "unfollow" the Braves.

Removing "First Baseman for the Atlanta Braves" makes sense.
