McCann clears waivers

Yah its hard to get excited about any of the real options here. I'd stay furthest away from Wieters for the reasons you mentioned... he's still living basically on hype from when he was the big can't miss prospect... he will get paid way more than he's ever been or ever will be worth. Especially since he's not much of a defender. Hard not to love what Ramos has done this year, but man what a prolific injury history. He's still fairly young... 29 next year, but with his injury history 29 sounds pretty old. He's also never had a performance remotely close to this and has a .353 BABIP... not sure about his defensive skills but all those red flags on offense just scream stay away IMO. He's going to get paid a ton more than he's worth. Not excited about Norris at all... love Castro's defense and has some power upside, especially if platooned. With Flowers around he may be the best option. I'm okay with McCann if we can get him on the cheap, but I am very hesitant to give much talent for him given he's shown signs of decline in the past 3 years and he's getting towards the rapid decline stage most catchers face.

the more I think about free agent options, the more I think that McCann isn't such a bad idea if they don't have give up anything and don't have to guarantee that third year option.

Two years is a pretty good bridge and I don't think signing him stops them from looking for a controllable guy somewhere.

Is there a way to assess what McCann would have hit without shifts? I'd be interested in knowing. He's settled in as a .230 hitter and I gotta think he's .270 without the shift. Of course, he was a guy they'd shift before the shift was cool. He hits the ball hard and pretty consistently and always has, but he's a dead pull hitter and a pianoback.

BTW, my vote would be for Mac. There's nothing better out there that's affordable. And he does pair nicely with Flowers. I'd extend Flowers a couple years, too.

The odds are that option year will either have to be excersized to approve a trade or Mac would reach it organically, as it's easily obtainable unless he's DHing half the time in 2018. So it's really a 3/49 contract. If the Yankees don't want to include any money I would pass, much less give anything of value. If they want to include 14-16M and that become around a 3/34 contract then I would look to sell high on some low ceiling pitchers like Ellis, Whalen, Gant etc... and work out a trade for him.

At the right price Mac could be an ideal acquisition for many reasons. At an overpay it's a bad idea and we need to move on.

That's true. I imagine Mac will want that final season guaranteed in order to approve a trade, which is smart in his end, and hurts the Yankees negotiating power.

I would think the place to start would be to compare his xBABIP to his actual BABIP. A large amount of the difference could be attributed to shifts.

Were they eating the whole contract? It's hard to deal with people who are delusional

they would have to eat the whole contract, make us dessert and give us a reach-a-round because McCann for Free is not even close the same value as Ender and Folty.. He is not worth one of those guys, even if the Stankees paid his contract..

Some great tidbits in that article

- The Braves want Matt Kemp to lose some weight, and it’s already part of his plan. So the two are on the same page
- Jeff Francoeur has passed through waivers and could help a contender as a spare outfielder … Jim Johnson was claimed, and no trade could be worked out …
- The Braves got two pretty good prospects, speedster Anfernee Seymour and lefty Michael Mader, for Hunter Cervenka. Seymour is seen by some as a future Chone Figgins (Angels version, they hope).

I probably just missed it, but I didn't know Johnson was claimed and couldn't get a deal worked out.

nothing in ink, but many figured it was the Muts who claim JJ and the Braves and Muts couldn't work a deal.

Heyman's latest says that the Yankees' last request was Folty and Inciarte for McCann. Lol.

That is quite possibly the most asinine request I've ever seen. Folty would be the last pitcher I would deal if I were the Braves, and Inciarte himself is worth more than Mac with his current contract.

Inciarte for Mac plus lots of cash could make sense though. And by "lots" I mean almost all of his contract.

Heyman seems to contradict the theory that the Mets claimed Johnson...

"The Mets are still looking around for relief. Jim Johnson, who has now been blocked on waivers, would have been a help."

Agreed, its a bat**** crazy request.

I'm sure we sold pretty darn high. He's been REALLY good lately. Earlier in the year, he kept letting guys on base, even in his successful innings - dude is just lights out right now.

Ha, not even Dave Stewart would entertain that deal. Best to move on. If they call with a better offer, no harm in listening, but it just doesn't seem like there's going to be a match if that's where the conversation started.
no need to entertain such an outlandish proposal...when they come to their senses they can call us
