Megathread: Braves lose Maitan, Bae and 10+ plus International Sanctions.

We all knew the Maitan deal stunk. Especially since it was common knowledge that Braves were going to sign him like 6 months before he was even eligible.

pretty sure we knew like a year or two before he signed. 6 months before he was photo’d wearing the A hoodie. But before that it was one of the worst kept secrets.

I think enscheff has pretty much nailed this and it's obvious for those paying attention. There has been a major disconnect between certain moves that the FO has made. Coppy is getting canned for the same reasons Wren was fired. The old guard does not want a long rebuild process and has stopped every effort to have that happen.

Coppy is not being fired for the same reasons Wren was fired for. You give the old guard too much credit for their Machavilean chicanery

Ohh hell..

Sources: MLB is investigating Atlanta's signing of top prospect Kevin Maitan. If improprieties are found, he could be declared a free agent.

Sources: Braves GM John Coppolella resigned after MLB found the team bundled international signing bonuses.

There’s an allegation (which the player’s agent denies) that Coppy offered a car to draft pick Drew Waters to get him to sign for slot.

What is this? Auburn football?

Then what was Coppy fired for?

From Passan article . .

While the long-term fallout of Coppolella’s actions remains unclear, the focus of MLB’s investigation narrowed in recent days to the bundling of international amateur signing bonuses to circumvent spending restrictions, according to sources. The scope of the Braves’ scheme remains unclear, but a source familiar with it deemed it “significantly bigger” than a similar one employed by the Boston Red Sox in the 2015-16 signing period. To skirt rules that limited them to signing players for a maximum $300,000 bonus, Boston overpaid for bonuses on lesser players represented by the same buscon, or trainer, of more highly regarded players, to whom extra money was funneled. The five players signed in the scheme were declared free agents, and the Red Sox were banned from signing any international players for a year.

The Braves’ troubles could extend far deeper, according to sources. The investigation remains open and is expected to look into the signing of top prospect Kevin Maitan, a 17-year-old shortstop who received a $4.25 million bonus last year. If improprieties are discovered with Maitan’s signing, he, too, could be declared a free agent, according to multiple sources.

The takeaway from this for me is that the **** on Cop is coming from inside. IMO, I'm sure that includes the "unpopular with his peers" stuff.

So, yeah, we'll see what the MLB investigation amounts to. It certainly appears that there's a healthy dollop of classic JS-era Braves Way buddy****ing going on regardless.

I wholeheartedly buy into the notion of a "Braves Way" special shove out the door. I'm just not convinced - yet - that it's applicable in this situation.

Edit: Although it certainly bears all the classic hallmarks.

Again, who the **** were we bundling? We blew past our cap in the signing period in which we signed Maitan, and we haven't signed a single guy for $300,000 that was on any radar whatsoever.

Oh ****.

Yeah, if we lose Maitan, I'm done. If we lose the #8 pick, I'm done. I can't waste anymore time and energy having the hope for this team pulled out from under me. Better things to focus on in life.

Don't get me wrong, it's possible this could be the oldies doing Coppy dirty, but the overwhelming initial evidence suggests that Coppy played way too fast and loose which wasn't a problem until the threat of losing Maitan, draft picks, penalties, etc. came into play. I think it's more likely that the John's are playing nice up front to mitigate the punishment which is definitely coming.

Ocam's razor definitely applies here

It could be palace intrigue or, yeah, likely that they're just absolutely ****ting on the guy in order to distance themselves from whatever happened. I think the magnitude of the infraction will probably tell the tale.

Honestly, though, if we lose Maitan, it stands to reason that it's because we cheated to get him, and wouldn't have had him to begin with if the process had been on the level.
