oh no

taxes

that are used properly to better society as a whole

the humanity

The thing is, it seems like taxes actually are used to better society in the Scandinavian countries. But here, it seems like they are used primarily to feed the DC machine, with a secondary purpose of funding corporate welfare, and a tertiary purpose of buying votes. Bettering society looks like it is far down the list of priorities.

I wish our tax system had more of a local focus, where it is easier to monitor spending and it's benefits. I've never voted against a SPLOST, even that Metro Atlanta transit monstrosity that got voted down a few years ago.

You might be amazed what we could afford if we didnt pay out the ass for military, incarcerating people for victimless crimes, and added a very lucrative legal drug market. I am not opposed to tax money being used to help(or attempt to help) people but I am against stacking all that cost on top of all the waste and bull****. Dont ever let the politicians tell you they dont get enough money.

I wonder why those numbers are so good for Norway....

Because they've leveraged their resources (mostly oil) extremely well and invested a lot of the returns back into civil society (as opposed to letting a bloated corporate oligarchy funnel off the proceeds).

I'd be a lot less opposed to fellow-Montanan Ryan Zinke's loosening up some of this nation's offshore drilling areas if the proceeds were earmarked for social programs benefiting the common weal—the very masses, indeed, who are taking on the preponderance of environmental risk when drilling commences.

Its a great thing when you know you'll be protected by the world superpower if a conflict ever arises and don't have to spend that much on defense.

Also a low population is nice to have when you are a developed nation and a relatively homogeneous population typically leads to low crime rates.

They clearly have a great civil society support structure but the above two factors play more into those great stats.

One of the most interesting topics to me is what would have happened if MLK Jr lived longer. Killing him made him a martyr for the cause, I doubt he would be as universally respected if he was not murdered. I think he would have been marginalized by the conservative propaganda machine.
