Mets and Braves "close on a trade"

Quite sure he knew this was likely to happen before he signed - not much chance he was "blindsided". Given his ties to the organization, I'm sure they told him they'd make every effort to place him with someone who had a legitimate opportunity to win if this kind of situation occurred.

Yeah, I said this when we signed him. He wouldn't have resigned here if he wasn't ok with it. There are worse fates than living at home for some portion of the season and eventually getting dropped into a pennant race.

Didn't like the chacin trade, but love this deal. Been a fan of Morris for a while, and mentioned last year when we trade KJ to NYM that I wish we would have targeted him. Glad we got Morris. Great job by Coppy. KJ has now helped allow us to acquire Gant, Morris and Whalen. Unbelievable

Maybe we should collaborate with the Mets on their 3rd round pick this year. That way when we sign and then Trade KJ to them next year, we can just take that guy we scouted for them.

I think its a fair trade and anyone claiming it was a huge get is overrating Morris. Morris has nice K numbers at an advanced age in the minors, but he's also using max effort to get up to 92/93 on the gun. And when I say max effort, this dude is putting everything into every pitch. These causes some odd mechanics and there is no way he can repeat his mechanics and throw strikes.

I think best case he can figure out a way to not have an awful walk rate and become a 7th inning guy. That is a question mark though and seems to be a fair exchange for KJ.

no one called him a huge get

Sure. My thinking is accumulate as many as you can get and some are certain to stick.

This exactly; we've added 3 with the trades of Grilli/KJ/Chacin.

Individually none of them have a great chance, but maybe we get one bullpen arm out of these three. That would be worth it.

he went to the world series last year, I doubt he was too upset over the long term. (nor this year as he is back on a contender)

Yeah, he went to the World Series with them, but when he signed with us in the off season he was quoted as saying that his kid was pressuring him to sign with the Braves again.

Maybe KJ is happy because he's on a contender, but it really seems his priorities are more focused on his family. I don't think it reflects poorly on our front office, but I hope for Kelly's sake that it's something that he wanted to have happen.

I doubt they would have traded him without talking to him. If he had really pushed I bet he would have stayed, but the chance to maybe go back to the WS and play meaningful games had to be appealing. These guys want to win!

How can this not be a win for the Braves?

We paid KJ 2 million with a shot at 1.25 million more in incentives. No idea if we are sending any money with him.

If we could buy a top 30 (saw Morris was top 30 in some people's rankings of the mets) prospect from every team for 2-3 million bucks we would do it in a heartbeat. With the FA class the way it is now, I'd love to spend 60 million that way instead of over paying Weiters. We'd probably get back 5 guys that have some role and maybe get lucky and get 1-2 that are actually useful.

This guy could never throw a pitch for us. But to get a guy from another system's top 30 and in AAA for KJ.....that is a win. Anyone who says otherwise is trying to be negative.

http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2016?list=nym he was a top 20 according to MLB.com and was #13 last year for them.

You don't think if the Mets had offered him a contract he wouldn't have stayed in New York? Of course he would have.

Kelly told MLB.com that his son came to him in the offseason and asked him to sign with the Braves again so he could be at home during the season. Kelly said in the same article that he was considering retirement. It seems to me that he preferred playing closer to home than being on a contender.
