Michael Harris Extension Reportedly Coming

I love the deal.
I also loved the inciarte extension. Same reasoning, I thought the defense would be a baseline that kept it a solid deal.

The thing that surprised me is we control past 30. Say what you will on Albies and acuna deals but they looked designed to me to set them up for a second pay day by being free accents before 30.

For him getting 5 million now vs 700k is a big raise. Sets him up to invest and make money back and still live like a pro athlete.

If he plays cf like this I think he’s a bargain at 10 million.

Question will be how he hits. Even if he has platoon splits, he is at least on the side where he can play most of the time. I’m watching obp and it’s climbing. Seems to hit the ball hard. I think he’s at least what klaw thought pache was, elite d in cf plus 15-20 hrs.

Of all the extensions that AA has handed out so far, this one makes me most nervous. Plus these extensions continue to make the money given to Albies and Acuna look criminal. I really hope they fix that soon.

I'm in the opposite chair. In terms of risk, I think both the Riley and Olson carry a higher potential downside. Harris will still be under 30 when the deal expires and as Russ said above, if he stays healthy and doesn't completely fall off the table with the bat, the defense will retain value. We'll be paying Olson and Riley well into their 30s and while they agreed to team-friendly deals, offensive production will have to carry those contracts.

I love that AA has been handing out money like candy since the Freeman saga.

Freddie probably regrets not working with AA even more seeing these guys all get extent.

Bravo to AA for keeping the core. Sure it's a gamble as Enscheff said, but these are all homegrown guys outside of Olson who we acquired via homegrown talent.

The fanbase should reward the team for keeping the core together. Hope they don't turn on AA when Swanson isn't given big money.

A recognizable core of winning players will make the TV contract even more lucrative. There is a clear strategy here to expand revenues as much as possible.

Think we are headed for a top 5 payroll consistently and any poor contracts won't impair our ability to improve the team.

Far from it, and it's pretty insulting to keep hearing that - for us "regular people" as well as them.

They were both handed life-changing (not only for them, but generations of their families) money by the times they were old enough to graduate college. Anyone that thinks the money they have been GUARANTEED (even if they never play another game) is "criminal" grew up on a different planet than the rest of us. Give them a little credit - they CHOSE not only to accept that money to "work" the rest of their lives where THEY wanted to live - how many people does anyone know personally that ever got to make that kind of decision, money be *amned??? That's without even considering the fact that the money is possibly more life-altering for people where they grew up than it is for lots of kids who were born in the U. S.. The market COMPLETELY changed after they signed - they both would have gotten an extra arbitration year under the new CBA which would have significantly escalated what the last 3-4 years of those deals would have been "worth". The Braves don't OWE them a renegotiated deal any more than your employer owes you a raise because the inflation rate has exploded. If they (or us) thought the salary was insulting or they'd have trouble getting by on it, it was on them to bet on themselves rather than take the bird in the hand. They preferred the combination of the security/location/whatever other factors that were important to them and they took it. They no longer have to even worry about the level of their performance the rest of their lives. How many 20-somethings on this planet are or have been in that position?

Let's let that one die folks - even Ozzie is making more money than the vast majority of people here ever even dreamed about.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised to see them approached about tacking on extra years as a bit of a "reward" for helping start the culture now that the other core pieces have been locked up. IF THE MONEY IS AVAILABLE after inking those other deals - and they are interested in playing out the rest of their careers here (and with this group) I could see Alex approaching Ozzie about tacking on an extra 3 years at $15 million per - that would take him through his age 33 season - his reward would be getting paid like (roughly) a 2 WAR player when it's legitimately reasonable to expect his decline to start. Adding another 2 guaranteed years and $50 million to the end of Acuna's deal would take him through his age 32 season where it's also fair to expect his decline to begin as well.

Those additional years would bring their initial deals much closer to CURRENT market value and would lock everyone up through the end of this decade assuming Olson's 2030 option is picked up.

Ideally, he turns out to be more Starling Marte and less Jackie Bradley Jr.

Would be interesting to see if Soroka would take the Teheran deal (say 6/$40 million) if he can finish the season healthy and strong.

Way too much to hope for IMO, but are you willing to roll those dice with his injury history and this team around you - especially when they've paid you for 2 rehab seasons?

I like the fact that so much of the core team is locked in over the next decade. That will make AAs job a little easier in filling out the roster every year.

I'd expect him to cut bait to the first team that takes Ozuna. He has 2 years at $16m each left, which IMO is not an unmovable contract.

I don’t think you can guarantee Soroka 40 million. But if it’s something like 2/20m to guarantee his arb years, in exchange for 3 team friendly club options, I think that Soroka would consider that.

The raise for Harris puts the 2023 payroll right around $180M with a massive hole at SS, and LF still a mess mostly filled by Rosario.

At this point I wouldnÂ’t be surprised if AA gave SS to Grissom and resigned Grossman for LF, nor would I be surprised if he gave Correa $300M. Literally nothing would surprise me this off-season to fill SS and LF.

If he is going to spend for the position, would much rather have Turner.

This is a ridiculous argument. Im sure they were ecstatic about the deals at the time. But we they've seen more and more of their peers getting paid way more, including their own teammates, you don't think it makes them at all upset?

well... in fairness, $100 mil when Acuna signed was worth a ton more than $100 mil today.

Anyone have insight into the contract Dansby signed for this year? Did we offer more and he declined?

I think he'll be gone after this season unfortunately. It looks like he bet on himself and should win the lottery this winter. He'll have to take significantly less money to stay here. This does not fit the AA model.

I went to my first game at the new park a few weeks ago.... the Battery is INSANE and going to only get bigger and bigger. My buddy who lives in ATL said "if I was single, I'd definitely live at the Battery". It was SLAMMED an hour before the game. If we can add some more hardware in the short term the Braves stock will skyrocket even more.

I’m impressed with how good the food is at the battery. I was sure that it would be a typical tourist trap.

I was there in early July and stayed at Omni. The Battery was slammed 2 hours before and at least an hour after. There were a bunch of fans at the omni as well so there was smaller crowds wandering around hours before the game (eating, shopping, stadium tours)... What I noticed more than anything from when I was there two years ago was the condos.. They have a lot of extended stay/living areas all around that park. Only thing I think that is missing is some level of mass transit.. but not sure that is in the works..

I agree. I got a burger from H&F and it was effing good. Missing some toppings to add though because I like mine with lettuce and tomato... you know the rest.
