Minor League Thread Part Deux

Well -

This AA team is awful. .595 Ops Cody Milligan hitting lead off.

JR Ritchie ain’t close. Hit 95 a few times. The FB pops the mitt like others don’t. The opposing starter threw around the same from the left side and it didn’t pop like that. Breaking ball isn’t missing many bats at all.

Not sure there’s much to watch here.

Final lines:

Ritchie: 5.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 3 R, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 HR

Caminiti: 4 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 R, 0 BB, 8 K, 1 HR, 1 HBP

Profar with a double and HR so far tonight with at least one more AB to go.

I’ll add this was the Biloxi Shuckers who are pretty dang good. They have a few players that should make the show soon.

Home plate ump looked to squeeze JR early. He gave up a double in the corner and some singles the settled in before the HR ball

15 game hit streak now for Tornes. And he is 16/17 in SB attempts.

Michael Martinez is also showing out in the DSL. In 14 games he has 10 XBHs including 2 homers, and he is leading the team with a 1.062 OPS. Before you get excited, that 1.062 OPS is good for about 20th in the DSL, so it is obviously an offense heavy league. Martinez turned 18 in January, so he is either at league average or slightly above league average in terms of age. But results are results. I can't find any info on when we signed him. He isn't listed in any of the previous 3 international signing classes. I can't seem to find a write up on him on line.

Tornes is the one I'm most excited about so far. He'll stay in the DSL I'm guessing the rest of the year.

Tornes is going to rocket up prospect lists quick. Looks like a race between him and Cam for our top prospect spot. Might be years away but thats a solid top 2 imo.

Michael was signed out of the Dominican in 2024 and activated immediately. He had an otherwise non eventful DSL debut, but I made note he was HBP 18 times! In 49 games. He's a spindly made up dude but easy projection to add strength and weight. Didn't look extraordinarily fast to me but he has some twitch. To me batting wise, he can get to just about anything and drive it pretty well. Obviously, he'll need to calm a little of the swing down, but it's not egregious for such a young dude. Love Espinal too.

You know he is good because other teams beat writers are including him in trades for their castoffs.

They call him a throw-in, but they are really hoping to fleece the Braves.

I saw a few of those lol. They think bc he's 16 he would be a toss in and we wouldn't be aware. Ain't happening.

Toss-ins among these super young prospects are typically guys that were signed for low contracts and haven't broken out yet. Someone like Juan Mateo is a toss-in. Tornes on the other hand signed a 2.5 million contract. And while it's early, he has all the makings of a guy that can develop into an elite prospect very quickly. There is zero chance anyone is getting him in any realistic trade.

They can have the ghost of Kevin Maitan, the great Izzy Wilson, Shean Michael and a great big F U if they're really asking for that kid.

Profar has been on a tear. Hopefully that transfers to the big club next week bc we need him.
The idea with Profar was if the exit velocity he added in 2024 was sustained in 2025 we could expect his offensive gains to be real. His average exit velocity in 2024 was 91.1, which was up from 86.5-87.5 the previous years when he was a very mediocre hitter.

Despite his nice numbers in AAA, his average exit velocity is 86.5, which is right in the range of his usual mediocre seasons. So while we most likely won't see the 800-850 OPS version of Profar, even the 700 OPS version will be an improvement for this terrible collection of position players.
