Minor League Thread Part Deux

I'm indifferent about the organizational results of our (the Braves) minor league system. There are guys I like higher and lower than TC or anyone else rates them. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There are players they love that are waaaayyy too high for me and guys they are lower on. Most of you who go through the season get my eyes on view. I don't miss often (no brag...I miss), but this system is 2 years and high end players away from being relevant again.

The philosophy shift last year added positional talent which was needed. I honestly don't think the drafts have been awful, but the IFA misses have been monumental. In short, the system has served its purpose in feeding the mlb team. I would personally like to a see a shift in philosophy regarding hitting and pitching but that's another story.
The post-punishment IFA classes have been staggeringly unproductive heretofore.

Your minor league reports are a highlight of this board.

Fuentes and Gil were good finds. But in general, it's been pretty barren, particularly with our more expensive signings.

Fingers crossed on Tornes. Early reports are very good, however. Hopefully he starts the year in the FCL.

Michael Martinez isn't very heralded, but he is one I am also keeping an eye on this year as he plays his first season stateside. The power and plate discipline he showcased last year were pretty impressive for an 18 year old.

Prospects 12-7 up today:

Lara being top 10 is pretty wild to me, considering he is a reliever only at this point. Granted, the raw stuff is really impressive and it gives him top tier closer potential. It's still hard for me to justify putting a reliever in our top 10.

I pretty much agree on the rest.

I am going to take a guess at their Top 6 looking like this:

6. Southisene
5. Tornes
4. Murphy
3. Ritchie
2. Fuentes
1. Cam

“Lodise projects to be a below average to potentially average hitter with average to a tick above power and average speed. Defensively he may or may not be able to stick at shortstop, but would be able to slide over to second base”

i think that’s a really bear-ish take on Lodise.

I try not to put much stock into successful or less than stellar debuts. However, there are general concerns when it comes to batting when I see the things I saw out of Alex and Tate. Again, they’ve had an off-season of instruction and hopefully can gain command of the strike zone, but the reason I’ve been hypocritical of a lot of of the instruction that these guys get from the organization is that their awareness in the zone and their recognition...is woeful at times.

In the Braves defense, they draft better than average athletes who have some versatility, some quick twitch and projection. (Drake is a great example, Tim Collins is not). I will really be watching this year to see what type of progress. The positional players make from a batting perspective. I’ve learned to reserve judgment until I see them, until I see their results and their approach. However, I am cautiously optimistic that the recent draft philosophy is going to merge with a better offensive philosophy.

That’s probably exactly what he’ll be.

I don’t know enough of him to disagree, that’s just a really disappointing one year status report for a guy who did really in the ACC and won the Houser award before being drafted in the second round.

I'll wait to reserve judgement until he's had a full year in the minors. Pro ball is a whole lot different from college and it takes some longer to adjust than others.

The hit tool is a pretty big concern. But if he can hit for enough power, cut down the Ks, and play quality defense, then the hit tool isn't too much of a concern.

JP Crawford is probably a decent comp for Lodise. Though Lodise will likely steal a lot more bases than Crawford has over his career.
