Minor League Thread Part Deux

Yeah the mid season update would likely land us 5 guys or more on the top 100 with more work to their names.
It is mentioned a few times that top 100 was easily within reach for around 8\9 guys.

Some of the cold climate bats are showing promise. Those can be tough to nail.

Gil showing up built like a brick shithouse also helps. Said he's up 15 lbs of muscle.

So the opposite of Maitan?

Problem is, people like Ritchie and Fuentes and maybe another or two will probably already have blown through their eligibility by that point. So, then, we’re right back to where we are now.

Seems like Ritchie and Fuentes should be 55s and Caminiti, Tornes, and Gil should be 50+.

Also, their pitch grades and write up for Sinnard sounds like he should be a 50 as well.

But, those guys at the top, from what I know and have seen of them, I don’t think 45’s are doing them justice.
For guys as young as Tornes and Gil I'm fine putting them in the 45 band until they move up, but seems like you'd mark them 45+ given the upside potential

After looking at the Fangraphs FV scale linked in the article, I'm not sure why Ritchie and Fuentes aren't 55s. Their write ups call them both potential 3/4s which is the definition of a 55.

I won't whine too much about prospect analysts rating our farm poorly, but I do think it's straightforwardly true that our farm has had pretty dismal rankings for several years now and it keeps churning out one or two guys per year who make an impact on the big league team. Baldwin last year, Schwellenbach in 2024, Strider and Harris in 2022, etc. You could even stretch it and say Elder in 2023.

It certainly seems like the farm has consistently outperformed its rankings in recent years. Should that impact how non-partisan evaluators assess the system? Maybe not. But it's not hard to see it happening again this year with Fuentes and/or Ritchie.

Fuentes , Ritchie, Braun, Baumann, are all likely contributors

It feels like several of these guys have a real shot to take a big step forward in the next rankings. Having picks No. 9 and 26 in the draft should help a lot, too.

If they were on the Dodgers, they'd be borderline 60 FVs.

The disrespect on the top 11-12 is insane.
There are some huge disagreements in there for me but their top 10 is jumbled as was mine. Neither here nor there with their list. I did say that it would take another draft and a few International players to hit to get to mid or more. But as long as they accumulate more HIGH END talent, a list won't matter.

Adding2 first rounders will be a huge boost for the farm and I'm glad AA didn't lose the pick this offseason. Guys like Gill, Lodise, Tornes could very well have huge years and push they well into the 100 range. I suspect Cam will do big things and be a top 25-30 guy by the end of the season.

Dont pay attention to the rankings and FV crap. Its meaningless. Just use the scouting reports. When Gil destroys AA remember he's the 9th best prospect in a bad farm system and only a 40 FV according to them.

It's amazing what 3 similar philosophies for drafting can do to a farm. I'll take three: Paul Snyder, Roy Clark and now Ronit Shah. Honorable mention Brian Bridges(Mike Soroka, Austin Riley, Ian Anderson, and Kyle Wright).

Under Snyder, he preferred high schoolers who were good athletes. Given the choice between a pitcher and a position player with high upside, he went pitcher. Interestingly enough, he was my unofficiaI reason I first started going to minor league parks and eye ball scouting myself. (Chipper, Glavine, Andruw, Javy, Avery, Marquis are among his picks). I got to see the "Great 8" in Richmond...what a team.

Roy Clark - Bigger on who the player was as a person and not just skill. He wanted to know everything about the player they were bringing in. Pitcher heavy as well. (Freddie, JHey, McCann, Wainwright, Morton, Kimbrel, Frenchy....SCOTT THORMAN.....). Highly rated system a lot and he loved high schoolers as well.

Ronit Shah - Completes drafts on his own departments scouting and doesn't necessarily go with consensus. (Good and bad). Only 3 years here I think, Waldrep, Hackenburg (wasn't high on), Kuehler, Caminiti, Holton, Sinnard, Southisene, Lodise...so far). Obviously the jury is still out. However, last year's draft was a complete shift in thought. Position players who are athletes with upside. I think the failure rate may be high, but the ones that hit...will be solid.

Now, as I mention just a few snippets of the scouting direction, I wouldn't say currently that there are generational players in the system...yet. There are quite a bit of solid to above average players who could contribute and be quite good. Any list that the experts give...I give...a couch potato gives is going to be all over the place. That's a reflection of the system and up to this point is pretty on par with what we see and what is produced.

I think we need to go back to a quantity over quality approach to international talent.
It does seem to work better. Big swing and misses. Johnny Almaraz and Rolando Petit were our best international scouts. They found Acuna, Ozzie, Teheran. Smaller signings..big results. Teheran was the more expensive at the time.
