Minor league thread

I hope we keep him down in AAA for the whole season. I think he has some promise and getting a full season of success will help with confidence.

agree. he needs the kyle wright treatment. Stay in AAA, don't get jerked around. Fix your issues.

Still think he's a Will Smith replacement and not a starter next year. Happy to be wrong.

This is exactly the reason why you don't give up on a guy like Waters. As frustrating as his contact issues are, he is a very good defender, a terror on the base paths, and his EV is quite good. It isn't like he's a Braxton Davidson type of prospect where he only has 1 skill. It literally would not take much for Waters but a valuable player, at least while he's cheap. And he's still young enough to figure things out.

I agree.
I think there is a chance he puts it together. He's not healthy yet. Being passed by Harris could be the dose of humility he needs to work on approach.

He's likely going to be nothing, but there is still a reasonable chance at value.

Plus, this year and next he is still likely one injury away from being on the team if he's healthy. We have Rosario for another year for some reason, but if he's struggling or hurt Waters might be your guy.

So waters gets 4 hits and folks jump out to say “I told you so”? Odd…

I'm not if you are referring to me.

I think he has value. I think he could be good. I also think there is a chance he could improve enough to be used in another deal. We do not have many position prospects at all. We do not have many pieces to trade. In the event an opportunity comes up to get an impact guy I'd like Waters around to be the lottery ticket sweetener vs being thrown out for a couple of months of a 2 WAR player.

I'm not saying I told you so unless he can get that walk rate back around 10%, the K rate under 25% and the slugging over 450 (at least from the left side).

Nope. Just not treating him like he's Braxton Davidson or something. There is legit no reason to give up on Waters or assume he won't be contributor just because he has contact issues. I still think he has a good chance at being a valuable player while he's cheap. Good defensive CFers with his power and speed don't grow on trees.

Well thus far his power is only a theory and yet to be a reality at any level... he's basically Jordan Schafer (although Jordan actually showed out quite a bit more in the minors)... I'm expecting nothing from Waters but I'll be pleasantly surprised if he has any use.

I've said this too. Not hating on him....dream if you must.....I would like to see him succeed, but he's doing nothing different than he always has (IMHO).

You actually look at their minor league numbers and Waters isn’t even half the prospect Jordan Schafer was. That’s all I need to know

Where does Jordan Shafer rank amongst ex Braves who played so little yet everyone remembers who they are?

Honorable mentions include Kyle Davies, Damian Moss, Scott Thorman, Brooks Conrad

The opposite of this would be Chuck James He started 4 years for the Braves and I can’t remember a single moment.

Not sure I entirely agree.

In 07 Schafer was 20. Hit 372 in 145 PA's with a 187 WRC+ in A ball. Hit 294 in 481 PA's with a 122 WRC+ in A+ ball.
In 08 he hit 269 in 350 PA's with a 130 WRC+ in AA

Waters followed a similar path but was a year younger

In 2018 Waters was 19. He hit 303 in 365 PA's with a 145 WRC+ in A ball. He hit 268 in 133 PA's with a 94 WRC+ in A+
In 2019 he hit 319 in 454 PA's with a 144 WRC+ in AA.

Key takeaway for me is how they do at AA. Top prospects usually hit that league younger than most players. Waters hit better than Schafer while being a year younger. In the end it doesn't all mean much. Schaffer busted. Waters has tools but it's easy to see him being a bust as well. They are similar players with similar prospect status imo. Guys that got by on athleticism alone who won't have enough ability to make it/stick in the big leagues. They won't be the first or last like that.

Only thing I remember about Chuck James is him jumping off the roof of a building and breaking his wrists while trying to land in a pool.

Waters at 28.4% k rate now. Obviously not good, but it was 33% a week or so ago. Maybe he continue to improve on this huge issue for him.

I still think he will be an mlb player... maybe only a heredia type though

Mezquita may well be the best prospect in the organization - by far the best position prospect. .315/.386/.815 after going 4-6 yesterday - if his power comes, look out. Also has 6 SBs.

Smith-Shawver continuing to mow people down - 62 Ks in 38.2 IP after 7 more while twirling 5 innings of 2 hit, 1 ER ball yesterday.

Tanner Gordon adjusting in Mississippi - 2 runs allowed in his last 18 IP. 7 inning complete game yesterday - 1 ER, 4 hits, 7 Ks, 2 BBs.

What we think about Nolan kingham?
25 years old in AAA
7.68 k9, 1.06 bb9
2.65 era
3.52 FIP

He's why you don't scout the boxscores - he would be a lower-level AAAA Pitcher if he was actually good enough to stick as a SP. Nothing that stands out whatsoever - velo isn't impressive and he doesn't have an MLB-level out pitch. Control and command guy like Chavez but his breaking stuff is nowhere as good.

Nobody is going to be fooled by anything Waters does in the next few weeks to increase his trade value. He is well down the path of failed toolsy OF prospects. You guys are grasping at straws because the system is so thin right now.

It’s time to understand the farm is awful because the MLB team is young and great.
