Minor league thread

Pretty likely to be in the minority on Benintendi personally, but he's probably as close to a "perfect fit" as there is out there right now - and I'd be willing to give up a pretty nice piece for him.

While most of us understand it's not entirely necessary to balance a lineup for things to be "optimum", a high average/contact/OBP guy that can really handle the bat is the ideal fit behind Acuna - particularly if he's left-handed. There's always the hope that Harris turns into that guy, but with his power potential, it would be great to have him splitting up the RH bats lower in the order. If you had TWO contact-oriented LH bats, you really don't have to worry about Ozzie's tendency to be a free-swinger at times. Acuna, Benintendi, Riley, Olson, Ozuna, Ozzie, d'Arnaud/Contreras, Harris, Dansby really doesn't leave a lot of chances for opposing Pitchers to catch a breath except during those times when several guys go into chase-mode at the same time.

Not that important to have that balance early in games, but it sure does make it tough for opposing Managers to shuffle their pens late in games with everyone required to face the 3 batter minimum.

I brought up Benintendi the other day. He is a really good fit here and would lock down the outfield defense. He’s a FA after this year so he shouldn’t cost a lot. The Royals aren’t going anywhere so they may be willing to sell him now.

OK Benintendi is batting 330 or so, just what do you think Royals would/could demand from a team wanting to make the playoffs (Braves, of course) and just what do the Braves have to offer? IMO nothing of comparable value for a current 1.6WAR player.

He’s only controlled for the rest of this season so it can’t be crazy. Shuster may be to much so maybe we could get a BP piece to go along with him.

Speaking of benintendi, he is a reasonable comparison for what Harris may become if he isn’t quite Adam Eaton.

Having said that, everybody understands his .387 BABIP is propping up his current numbers, so nobody will be fooled into thinking he is suddenly an impact player. He’s a great target for AA to get an affordable fix in the OF. He would have been a better target than Rosario as a FA.

Went to a Rome game Friday. Grissom is taller and leaner than I thought but looked fluid.
Malloy looks like a bouncer, but moves well and has that pop.
If you told me Javier Valdez was a promising prospect I would believe you.
Landon Stephens looked horrible against lefties
and Beau Phillip looked overmatched.

A couple of interesting notes...

Waters is down to .266 with a .715 OPS following yesterday's game - although if you're still on his bandwagon he didn't strike out.

Gosselin is logging time in RF now that Perez, Valaika, and Dunand are on the roster too - two more hits yesterday. He's up to .324 with an .877 OPS.

Elder goes again today after carrying a no-no into the 7th last time out.

Shuster got knocked around for the first time yesterday - kinda wonder how much that has to do with needing a new challenge. His ERA still stands at 3.02 after giving up 6 ER in 2.1 IP yesterday.

Tyler Tolve continues to hit well for a Catching prospect - .284/.315/.766 after yesterday, right in line with his career numbers - although he might be a shade old to still be in Rome.

Can you remind me which names to care about? I've been ignoring the international signings for so long, because the Braves haven't really been allowed to have any of note, that now I have no clue who are the worthwhile watches.
Keep an eye out for Diego Benitez...posted about him some time ago. The Yankees were going to sign him originally but low balled him after signing the top free agent in the International market. Braves got back in on international game and made some great signings.

so what are you giving up to get him now?

I just don't see a piece that I would move to get him now. It is going to cost more. At the deadline, when his babip is likely down and they have to move him, then he's cheap.

I said I wouldn't give shuster for him. I wouldn't give up any of our very few bats for him. I can only think about giving up some of our AAAA arms for the guy.

Our system is depressing. Waters can be written off, he’s been the same guy for 3 years. I had high hopes for some of the arms taking steps forward and it hasn’t happened for the most part. I thought one of Tarnok or Vodnik would turn into a guy. Vodnik has been moved to the pen, Tarnok has struggled.

Can't help but to agree.

However, I still say it is more important to look at your talent under 25 and/or talent with 5+ years of control. We still have a stocked team under those criteria.

Harris looks legit to me. I'm not sure how good he'll be, but he looks like a guy who can play a plus CF and handle the bat well enough. Upside to be more.

Maybe Shewmake has a role of some sort. Maybe some of the arms have a role. I like Grissom given his OBP and hit tool, we'll see if the has the power or the ability to stick at SS.

Really important drafts over the next couple of years to get some options. When these studs are in their 30s in 5-7 years we need some options. I'd like us to take lots of high upside guys.

It's acceptable that our farm system is in poor of a state it is now, with how much we've graduated to help the big league team, and also have been choosing later in first round. The issue it is will have to start making a move forward in the next few years, otherwise you can see when the end of our contention window will be, which is likely when the Acuna/Albies contracts end.

every team, who don't print their own money, has this issue. deplete the system to sustain a window of opportunity, while picking later to hinder restocking said system. Couple that with the sactions and the Braves have to be careful. Closing the window a few years prior to it slamming shut would be optimal... but I am not sure if anyone knows exactly how to time that right.

Yea, that's definitely tricky. It would just depend how much value there is on the active roster. Thinking back to our rebuild which began in 2014, there was a lot of value to trade on the active roster, but the returns they received weren't always optimal, more like quantity over quality at times, and we all know the BJ Upton trade blunder.

I think our contention window is over then. We would be insanely lucky and/or well run for it not to happen. Especially when we don't offer Acuna the 500 million he gets from the dodgers.

I think our best hope is to make good investments and picks in the next 3-5 years to make that re-set short or avoid a total bottom out. We are not going to pay Max, Riley, whomever we get at SS this year and second contracts to Acuna and Albies. We will need some replacements ready. Unlikely you can replace any of those guys, but we have to plan for it and try.

The payroll is going up, and that is appreciated. But ATL is going to need to have a roster where 2/3 of the guys are under team control or low paid vets.
