Umps taking over the game in the top of the 10th in Rome. Ump blew a strike 3 letting the batter get an RBI single next pitch. The guy was then picked off first and the other ump blew the call. Brutal.

I'm embarrassed to ask, but where is Phillips?

He was the second round high school pitcher we took in last year's draft... he had TJS right before the draft, but if he comes back to full strength was thought to have the highest ceiling of them all. Upper 90s heat and still a bit projectable. If his rehab remains on track, we could see him in some FCL games by the end of the year but I doubt they will rush him.

Still rehabbing in extended spring training. He had his Tommy John middle of April last year. He posted video on social media the other day of him facing hitters again for the first time, so seems like recovery is going well.

Side note on Phillips that I just realized the other day. Before he had TJ, Kiley McDaniel had him as the 20th overall prospect in the 2022 class - ahead of Murphy and Ritchie. I knew he was highly regarded, but I didn’t remember people being THAT high on him.

Yup, he was considered one of the best HS pitching prospects in the nation before TJS... had to go slightly over slot to get him.

Combined 19 1/3 IP 35K and 6 BB

Braves gave Smith-Shawver 6 innings in spring training, which although not a ton of innings showed some interest on the part of the big club seeing he had never pitched above Low-A. Braves gave Smith-Shawver almost a million as a signing bonus to lure him away from a dual-sport scholarship (football--as a QB--and baseball) at Texas Tech. Looks to have improved control this season. Has lowered BB-rate while K-rate remains high. Curious to see how quickly they move him.

I'm guessing Murphy and Richie stay in Augusta for at least through the first half and maybe move up during the last month.

Was thinking Soroka would be lined up to start today since he hasn't pitched in a week but he's not the listed starter for Gwinnett. Hopefully no issues.

why are they limiting innings for a guy who threw no innings for 2 years. Wouldn't they want to ramp up his innings.. I mean is there some number they have on him for the year? Like he can't throw more than 150 innings.. how do they even determine a number like that.

You don't want to do too much too quick. His body isn't used to the stress of it so you need to bring him along slowly.

I knew they wouldn’t rush him and limit his innings. With the rotation in good shape there’s no need to.

It makes sense to limit his innings. And it also makes sense to get the bulk of those in the 2nd half as he helps lead the Braves to another division title and WS.

Makes complete sense to manage innings especially because he hasn’t pitched in virtually over 2 years. Especially when he just recovered from a soft tissue tweak…

I get not over working a guy, I guess I don't get why now, why this way. Is pitch count more important that innings. I mean a guy who throws 90 pitches over 4 innings versus a guy who throws 90 pitches over 8 innings is the same thing right? I guess I would think routine and consistancy is just as important as long as there is not discomfort or issues. Building legs back and gaining in game command should be paramount as well. If we see a command set back his next start, one could conclude that spot starting him is not helping as much as one would hope.

Nacho Alvarez may be the only hitter left in the organization. The lineups top to bottom are....putrid. Don't look at any boxscores if you have allergies.
