Minor scratched from start

@ZachKleinWSB
Per MLB league source:
No structural damage on Mike Minor. He'll get rest for a few weeks

It's there. It just doesn't show up on the MRI yet. Let him rest for four weeks, then throw two rehab starts and he can fully blow it out in his first start back.

Then it'll show up on the MRI. "Gee Mike, your labrum is toast. Hey, that's the same thing Tommy Hanson had. Some rest and rehab, it'll clear right up, just like it did for Tommy."

I like the way you think. Always thinking ahead.

obviously our medical team is top notch

I don't see why we just don't hire Dr. Andrews to be on-staff 24/7.

We could have the 4 headed monster (Hart, Cox, Andrews, JS). He literally would consult Bobby and John John on what college and high school pitchers potentially could get TJ early so we could draft a sleeper in the 1st round.

So would you tender Minor a contract this offseason?

I think I would gamble on him.

I think we have to unless we plan on running a rookie out there the first week or 2 of the season as the 5th starter. As we know, pitching depth is key and no FA starter we sign for 5-6 million will have the upside Minor will. Unless we sign David Price. Then Minor can hit the road for all I care.

Of course you do. He shouldn't get a raise, may even get a cut. When healthy he was a strong pitcher. I don't think he'll be healthy again, but for a rebuilding team it's a worthwhile gamble. If he dominates next year his value is rebuilt a bit and we get prospect(s) for him.

Unfortunately, I'm not surprised. His mechanics just weren't conducive to long-term sustainability.

Oh you

I actually never really looked at Minor's mechanics. As a righty I fully admit I stink at analyzing lefty mechanics because for some reason I can't picture them the same. WEird I know.

Lack of forward momentum, and he opened up too early to where his shoulder and arm slot was left flying out too far from the rest of his kinetic chain inducing added stress on the shoulder.

If it was the elbow and not the shoulder, I'd definitely tender him for ~$7m. Shoulder injuries are real scary though. They're calling it exploratory at this point, which means they don't even know what's wrong. Since nothing obvious turned up on multiple MRIs, it seems unlikely that they will find a definitive issue during surgery that gives them confidence that he will be "fixed". I think we'll hear that surgery was a success and they just cleaned a couple things up. If I'm Hart, my baseline position is to non-tender him until or unless the medical staff is comfortable that they've found and addressed the problem.

Another option they have is to tender him, and then if he's healthy but ineffective in the Spring due to poor shoulder strength, they can release him for 30 days termination pay (a little over $1m). If he's got any lingering injury issues though, the MLBPA won't allow him to be released.
