MLB Draft Thread

I remember being excited about all the players the Braves drafted with underslot savings in the 2019 draft. Backstrom, Morton, Paolini, etc. High round tools or athleticism in later rounds while still getting some guys earlier who could probably contribute something. And Shewmake wasn’t going to be an all star but he could hit so he would at least move quickly. But now, Langeliers in the first and Harris in the third are the only names from that draft anyone can remember.

As always, I am optimistic about this class.

So you got a ROY out of the draft and a really good starting catcher out of the draft that helped us get our all star 1b? What was wrong with that draft again?
 
Nothing at all wrong with the 2019 draft. The safe or boring or underslot picks provided great value. The overslot guys we were mostly excited about evaporated. I was mostly pointing out the flaws in my own critique of that draft.

That's just how the baseball draft goes. The first 10 picks you usually know they are gonna be decent but after that it's all a crap shoot. It's always fun to look back and see how these guys developed. 25 teams passed on Trout when he was drafted and he was the Angels 2nd pick that draft behind Grichuk. Several places say we reached on a lot of guys but I trust their process bc we've produced as many or more top talent than anybody in baseball.
 
I agree with Jaw. Those over slots were supposed to be something and they never even got close to doing anything. Taking Shoemake way under didn't really accomplish what they hoped.. but the draft was successful at least.. I remember Backstrom was the one.. huge hype.

I am not going to pore through the drafts and international signings, but few of the overslot and high-profile international signings have played up to their billing and in the case of the post-Round 10 guys in 2019, only Tyler Owens is in the major leagues after toiling for what seems like forever in the Braves', Rangers', and Tigers' systems and Grissom and Estes are currently in AAA. Grissom and Estes turned out to be good trade chips, but that's probably because the Braves' trading partner in those deals grossly overestimated what those guys are as players.

PS--Owens is back in AAA.

It could be the draft strategy simply changed mid draft when McKenzie was still available.

but...didn't all the under slot guys go before him? are you suggesting they were going to use the extra cash on several small overslot guys, and then decided to splurge on him mid-draft?

Who knows if he works out. But labeling him as a likely utility player is extremely lazy analysis.

Swanson is exactly that sort of player. He has swing and miss issues, he doesn't get on base particularly well, and he doesn't hit for average. But what he does do is play defense very well and hit for power.

Zach Neto is the player Lodise gets compared to the most for what it's worth.

He didn’t do any analysis. He just copy and pasted one opinion by someone who has to write about every team.
