MLB Trade Deadline Discussion

Is Beane now going to target a hitter? He has plenty of chips to get a more productive hitter than Cespedes and have Gomes as a RH bench for lefties.

On what basis?

Lester is a legit top of the rotation starter in the AL and has been through the grind of the playoffs. Cespedes is a career .262/.318/.464 hitter with below average defense.

This trade makes zero sense for the Red Sox.

I'll take Cespedes in CF. BJ 4th outfielder. Schafer released.

I figured Samardzija had a decent contract. Either way, they are definitely adding some payroll which would have been a no-no 10 years ago.

Yeah, I think baseball is doing very well so all teams have money to spend. Good for the A's and I hope they win a WS this year (unless they play the Braves). Beane does a fantastic job and seems to get better with every year.

Ces a FA after next year as well.......don't get this trade for Boston at all.

Their OF is terrible. So now next year they have a 3 win player out there, which significantly improves it. Plus 2 early round picks (one for the trade and one for Cespedes if they don't sign him).

Yeah, makes sense. Lester is a FA after the year. They weren't going to get a haul of prospects for him.

Last 2 years + this year:

Total WAR : Ces - 7.5 / Lester - 11.9

Total Value : Ces - 36.8 mil / Lester - 60.3

Again.....this isn't close.

But you aren't figuring in the picks and the fact that the Sox get Cespedes for a whole year and the A's only have Lester for two months.

What are the chances the comp pick is as good as Lester? MLB draft is a needle in haystack venture.....Sox are going to be bad next year and Ces is gone after that, the trade just makes no sense. Why not trade Lester for prospect, if teams won't give you a top 2 prospect then aim lower. Sox are obviously rebuilding and won't compete this year or next, Ces does nothing to help them.

Red Sox are being cheap bastards, if you aren't going to give Lester 120 mil who the hell are you going to pay? Lester easily gets over 120 on open market, plus they only offered him 90 mil? Total slap in the face

Not to mention, Boston isn't going anywhere this year and is likely to resign Lester again in the offseason... there is absolutely no reason to hate this trade for the Sox.

If the Sox only offered him 90 mil and now he's going to hit the market and get easily over 120....probably 140-150....what makes you think Lester is going to sign there?

I bet you anything Lester resigns with them... so they get the comp pick and him back... no brainer. We have no idea, they may already have a handshake deal in place under the table. Lester would certainly want to have the improved team if he came back.

I don't know, the fact that he said he'd like to sign back with them? lol... look there are plenty of reports, but the fact is, in baseball... we have zero idea about actual offer numbers or negotiations.

Sox could compete next year depending on their offseason moves. A year of Cespedes for 2 months of Lester in and of itself is an even deal for the Sox. The two picks are icing on the cake. Sox don't see a lot of value in spending a bunch of money on a 31 year old starter. I can see their argument.

Boston gets Cespedes for 1 year at what costs? And now they are pressured to sign Cespedes for a longer deal, which I'm sure he will want and get some crazy 15 million dollar a year contract or something insane like that. So whether Lester comes back to the Sox or not, why wouldn't you take prospects that are give you the chance to improve over the long haul?
