MLB Trade Deadline Discussion

Bonafacio is a consistent sub .700 OPS player who doesn't steal as many bases as he used to. Your obsession with him is head scratching. Every year someone wants him and every year I fail to see why. If we got him, it better be for about a 20th tier prospect becsuse he's simply not a good player who strikes out a ton more than he walks... We have enough of those.

That's funny because I was thinking the same about your dislike for him. When I suggested him last year before he went to the Royals you called him trash and completely bashed my suggestion in multiple posts. Yet he did exactly what I said he'd do and played well for the Royals. While at the same time we went with a worse option in Johnson at second. We all know how well that worked out.

Bottom line: Bonifacio would be an upgrade for what we have and he can play all over. Plus he is a better defender at two positions that our worst starters play. His DRS this year in center and third is a combined 7 DRS. While CJ and BJ Upton have a combined -21 DRS at those positions (-9 DRS for BJ and -12 DRS for CJ). So again he makes a lot of sense to add unless you rather stick with a bench of Schafer, etc. But should we add him, what he does with his time here after that I'll let his play decide. And I expect that he'd play as well here as he did after being traded to the Royals.

Here's the latest from MLBTR on both Ruggiano and Bonifacio:

"The Cubs have rebuffed inquiries by the Yankees and others for outfielder Justin Ruggiano, and also are expecting to keep the rejuvenated Chris Coghlan, writes Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. They might also look to trade outfielder Nate Schierholtz, but they can put him through waivers in August and make a deal then. Meanwhile, the versatile Emilio Bonifacio is now drawing interest."

No one is looking at Bonifacio as a starter for us. He'd automatically become our best bench player, where Ramiro Pena's lusty .599 OPS is currently tops on the unit. He'd provide some flexibility and some speed off the bench.

Small sample issues are a big problem when evaluating bench players. There is too much of a tendency to take a look at what happened in the first half with a particular player and project that as the second half outcome. Last season, most of the bench had an unsustainably good first half and everyone was feeling too optimistic about what they would do in the second half. I think right now we're seeing the opposite phenomenon.

Bonifacio would not be the best hitter on our bench. Looking at his body of work over the 2012-2014 period, it is clear that Doumit is the better hitter. Bonifacio is a better hitter than Pena and Schafer, but it is a relatively small upgrade. Denorfia would represent more of an upgrade in terms of hitting, but doesn't have Bonifacio's defensive versatility or base running skills.

I generally agree. But I think we've all seen enough of this bench to know that Doumit is the only guy on it with any idea of how to hit (and I give him the benefit of the doubt because he has always been a guy who has seen somewhat regular playing time during his career and he's adjusting to an entirely new role). Pena provides defensive flexibility and is not totally inept at the plate. The question would be is Bonifacio better than Gosselin or Schafer for what he will cost in terms of acquisition. I'm not death on Schafer like a lot of folks here. He brings some value in defense and base-running, but he's not a bat at all. My guess is we'll see some of Gosselin so folks can determine what he can do.

Another player who I don't like much that may be available would be Sam Fuld. Twins are going nowhere and are probably looking to sell some pieces, but Gardenhire has this odd obsession with guys like Fuld so I don't know if he'd be available.

Constanza is one guy in AAA that I think would help as a pinch hitter and pinch runner. He's shown an ability to get a hit in pressure situations. He has a very simple, contact-oriented approach. A question worth asking when we are looking at the likes of Bonifacio or Denorfia is: who would I like at the plate in a key situation--Constanza or the other guy.

Remember in the 2012/2013 off-season, after we signed BJ but before we traded for Justin, when we were looking for a left fielder and Bonifacio was the most frequently mentioned name for that role?

Yeah, I can find that funny because it didn't happen.

Sorry, I just don't see him being enough of an upgrade to let anything go of value...

Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com adds some new teams to the Lester mix, as he reports that the Athletics, Blue Jays and Braves have all called to inquire on the BoSox ace.
Since Lester is a free agent at end of year this would not cost as much as someone like a Hamels or Price, add in the left reliever Andrew Miller and what could you trade to make this work?

for a guy who's about to be a FA? no way.

It seems to me in the past teams have often tried to bend the Braves over way more than other teams in these supposed trade discussions.

Unless it was that idiot in Arizona.

I had forgotten Lester was a FA this offseason. If he doesn't require a lot, I think we should strongly consider it.

I'm sure we have the assets, but probably just don't want to give them what they want.

You going to tell me the Sox wouldn't trade Miller for Peraza, Bethancourt or Sims?

Probably just don't match up well with them compared to what other teams are offering.
