MONDAY MINORS 4/10 ... A.M. Baseball in Mississippi; Touki awesome

So our four minor league starters are three first rounders and a competitive balance pick (Wentz). Not bad.

Touki through 5 now. 6k. 2 walks. Really good. Just runs deep counts. I imagine that is it for him since he is at 79 pitches. Jackson has been great behind plate. Threw behind runners all night keeping them honest.

This Alex Jackson man....could be an answer to the long term power shortage on the farm.

Wentz is getting hit hard. Six hits in 1+ inning so far.

I hope Wentz isn't still experiencing the dead arm and lack of velocity he had the last month of last season. I hope everything is ok with him health wise. Anyone know how his velocity was?

Mallex and Smyly might do it for them this year.

Good point. Saw the fangraph article today about how Mallex could be the new king of bunting and that he works hard at bunting every day. Talk about focusing on a pretty inefficient way of hitting. I find it hard to believe a player can become a very useful hitter by focusing on slapping grounders or bunts and beating out a hit to first. If Mallex wants to become a singles only hitter with a low average, that is one good way of accomplishing that.

Complete opposite approach to the main trend in the majors which is trying to hit balls in the air, avoiding grounders at all costs.

So I liked Mallex and Povse, and wasn't too happy about either trade. It's very early of course, but it sure looks like we took advantage of Seattle's willingness to move guys that were not the new regime's players...kinda like LA did with us on the HO trade.

Alex Jackson and Gohara could make the Mariners look really stupid a couple of years down the road.

Jackson I'm more skeptical about ... he needs to prove it in a big big way.

Gohara seemed like a lot to give up per the more plugged in daily scouts that weighed in on the trade. Some of the pundits that weren't up on his AFL stint etc didn't think he was all too special. I hope we found something there though. He has the toolbox.
