so, the Independence Day sequel...... well, it has all the cheese of the original and not much of the fun. The story and plot are a little.... weak is about as nice a way to put it. They seriously miss Will Smith's antics and though they brought back the Goldblum, he isn't given much to do or say and seems to spend most of the movie staring at stuff. The FX are good and all, but hardly enough to make up for the other weak parts of the movie.

The original film was a guilty pleasure. Sure it was dumb, bloated and silly, but it was a lot of fun! This film is severely missing that fun. it doesn't even try the over the top patriotism angle nor try and play up the "world coming together" angle, it just kinda....happens. 3/10 stars

Just noticed the remake for Pete's Dragon. The original was a great kid movie. One of the things that made it great was that it randomly had one of the best songs in movie history, "Candle on the Water". The leading lady's husband was lost at sea and she was distraught not knowing if he was dead or alive, but still hopeful. She was the daughter of an owner of a lighthouse, for context. And then on top of that, the same leading lady was trying to take care of a young orphaned boy who had horrible foster parents. The song fits both elements of the story. "I'll be your candle on the water. My love for you will always burn... Till every wave is warm and bright... A cold and friendless tied has found you... Don't let the stormy darkness pull you down." Is she singing for her lost husband or the orphaned kid? Arguably Disney's best song.

Star Wars Rogue One drops a new trailer tonight on ABC. HE makes an appearance

Jimmy Smits also confirmed he'll have a small role in Rogue One.

I like it. Prequel haters gonna hate, but it's bridging the OT and PT more.

I wish Lucas had given Bail Organa more development.

Prequels sucked. Sorry you don't realize it but you cannot watch them, and then watch TFA and come away with the prequels did it right.

I know now as an adult that the prequels were ****ed when this happened.

The prequels get hate because they aren't good movies. There are good parts in them but for the most part they just aren't good. I do think a lot of the hate is misguided as CGI is not bad. Lucasfilm with the PT advanced what films could do with CGI. That's a good thing. What's bad with the PT bad was the acting and scripts mainly and it showed on screen.

And I don't mind things like this as clearly Bail Organa would have a role and Smits is a good actor so it's good to have him back as a cameo.

No the biggest issue was the direction. The best films from a direction and writing standpoint have been the ones that Lucas had less say in, like TFA and Empire. A New Hope is cool, but it's a pretty crappy film, It's full of all kinds of terrible writing and terrible direction. But it told a fun story and it did well.

Lucas is a genius. He created an Empire. But he also created some super weak films with the prequels. If Rogue One is a success it shows how great his universe is, but that it probably is best under the direction of someone else

You and I have had this talk before. I enjoy the prequels. Not everybody does and that's ok. People pretending they don't exist need a hobby.

Anyways. New rogue one trailer got me like :pound:

Just need a cameo by Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan. We have two new star wars movies in the next 16 months. Crazy.

They do exist as evidence by a lot of the new stars wars stuff in the past year. It's slow but they are bringing characters/references over into the new material. There are some stuff the PT does that's good like world building. Something the OT and TFA don't really do. Rogue One looks like it will be doing this. And yes the trailer was really good. I'm pumped. It's the Wars man.

I'm just stoked we have an original live action star wars movie for the first time in 11 years.

Still not sure if Donnie Yen's character is a Jedi or just force sensitive.

Also, Gareth Edwards does a better job than Abrams of scaling things to look huge. If you watched his movie Monsters he did that on a low budget. The way he makes the Imperial ships look so ginormous is beautiful.

Honestly the perfect blend of cgi by Edwards looks like a Nolan film.

Can't wait to see how badass Vader is at the end and if they bridge the ending of Rogue One directly to the beginning of A New Hope.

The Thing (2011) did this at the end and bridged it perfectly to the 1980s The Thing.

Fwiw it's been said a few times that there won't be any Jedi in this movie.

I don't like prequels much because we all know how the movie will end. This is a prequel to a New Hope. The movie ends right when A New Hope begins.

Donnie Yen's character isn't a Jedi and but he's likely a little force sensitive. He does believe in the force though and we likely get to see some of the church of the force in this movie which was formed after the Jedi got wiped out. And yeah I do believe the movie ends with the plans being sent to Leia's ship with Vader chasing it down.

With Thrawn being included in the new season of Clone Wars and a book about him coming out next year, I'm hoping he shows up in SW 8 or something.

The loudest applause at Star Wars Europe last month was when Thrawn was mentioned.

Yeah I'm excited they are making him canon. He was the one of the best parts of the EU.

As I understand it he's a force monk. For lack of a better term. Basically he uses the force to overcome his blindness, but he doesn't really have a true grasp on it.

I'm assuming that's how the film ends. To me it's the logical ending, Vader ****ing **** up and A new Hope's beginning being soon after, maybe even a shot of the beginning of a New Hope being the ending shot of this, though I think that's a bit hokey.

The prequels really didn't do much well. The Clone Wars TV show was 100% more interesting than any prequel film. ANd I think TV was the better format for what George Lucas wanted to do with the prequels, delve into the world of the failing politics of the Republic, the Rise of Palpatine, the fall of the Jedi, and the fall of Anakin.

Of course I think the more interesting way to have done the prequels was not make them Anakin centric, but Obi Wan centric. As I recall it was Lucas's original plan before deciding Star Wars had to be about Skywalkers.

Suicide Squad was a terrible waste of it's actors. I mean I get it they had to redo it when Tom Hardy left. Kinnaman sucked.

But the writing was bad, Leto's Joker is the weakest of the 3 that have been on screen, the Robbie Quinn was a sexdriven teen's dream, but I still wish those 2 were handled more classically.

Spoilers follow. To me having the Joker in the film as anything other than backstory was worthless. It's obvious the buildup was to get Harley and Joker in the Batfleck film. But the issue is that the Joker never was that interested in Harley, she was always an ends to a mean, killing Batman. The adage is that Harley is obsessed with the Joker the Joker is obsessed with Batman. The idea that they're truly in love with each other is dumb and breaks their canon.

Saw a free preview (thanks to AARP) of Hands of Stone last night. Really solid boxing movie as the action looked more authentic than it does in most other boxing movies. Solid bio-pic. I didn't know all that much about Roberto Duran except that he was a great fighter, but it was interesting finding out about his roots and seeing some of the behind-the-scenes decisions made by others that affected his career. Of course, De Niro is great.

Obi-Wan centric PT would of been fantastic imo. The fall of Anakin wouldn't have to have been some failed attempt at making people be sympathetic towards him.
Just have it as some prodigy's quest for power.

Well it still could have.

Imagine if you would, Same general setup, but instead of Qui Gon and Obi Wan going to get Anakin and all the miracle birth things and so on so forth you follow the basic outline that started in Phantom Menace. Qui Gon and Obi Wan are on a mission from the council when Qui Gon is killed by Maul who Obi Wan then kills. The movie finishes with Obi Wan returning to the Jedi Council and completing Jedi Trials in an abridged format and getting knighted at the end. Second one picks up with Obi Wan getting Anakin as his Padawan where they form a serious friendship. Obi Wan struggles at times with his training and is under an undue amount of pressure from the Council and he doesn't know why. In the final act Anakin keeps on slipping until his full conversion. Instead though of order 66 we see Anakin as Darth Vader (in brief encounters from Video archive) hunt down and kill Jedi Knights. The film culminates with Darth Sidious and Darth Vader battling out with the remaining Jedi Council members like Windu, Yoda, etc. After being defeated Yoda, Obi Wan, and a few others go into hiding and develop their plans for the rebellion and the restoration of the Jedi Order.
