Murphy War Crimes

I hope they trade him in the off-season for some double bubble and a Bryce Harper bobble head so I never have to see this thread or topic again.

I had high hopes a month ago when you said you were done taking about it. Yet, here we are

oh just wait.. Murph was demoted to 8th in the order.. that should add fuel to the fire. At this pace he will be bat boy by October.

Its amusing to me that on a message board to talk Braves baseball it offends you so much that I am talking about key topics related to Braves baseball. Yes I've continued to pound the table on this one, but the table landscape has also drastically changed. Its gone from being frustrated to Murphy not playing enough for a starter, to becoming a co-starter, to arguably him being the number two. That's not an insignificant development in the context of our team. So yes, I will bring it up and frankly complain about it. Its arguably the biggest open variable related to our post season roster and line-up.

Case and point - Murphy playing today and is hitting behind Arcia and hitting 8th against a lefty. We've clearly seen enough evidence that Snit not only views Murphy has a co-starter, but if it was in his doing, Murphy would be our back-up. That is a major major concern with the post season looming.

Who would you hit him ahead of? Both Murphy and D'Arnaud have been very bad at the plate since the ASB.

Honestly, I wouldn't be shocked if Murphy wasn't dealing with some sort of nagging injury that has limited both his hitting and playing time.

So say what you will about Catcher usage but I ran the numbers for PAs for Braves catchers as of the end of tonight's doubleheader.

The catchers have a total of 717 PA

Murphy has 426 PAs (59.25%)
TDA has 277 PAs (38.53%)
Tromp has 16 PAs (02.22%)

Seems like the load has wound up right at around 60/40 which is what the team was looking to do.

That is because TDA was hurt for a month or 2. Murphy is by far the better player but is only getting 50% playing time since the break. Resting a catcher durning the dog days is a great call. Flat out making one of your better players a part time player is dumb. Twitner made the catcher the Braves threw into the deal to get Murph a more valuable player

Well yeah TDA was hurt for a month or 2 and Murphy kept playing and now TDA is getting a bit of extra run because he's making up for that time.

I know people don't like admit it, but maybe, just maybe, Murphy isn't Johnny Bench 2.0? Maybe as a hitter, Murphy is actually closer to the .780 OPS player he's been over his career? While that is still very good for a catcher, it wouldn't be like we were benching a perennial MVP candidate for Corky Miller.

Both catchers have been terrible since the break. While I certainly prefer Murphy start over TDA (mostly due to age), I think most of you are breathing too much into Murphy's hot start, believing that was the player we were getting. Coming into this season, TDA and Murphy essentially had the same batting line over the prior 4 seasons. Maybe as hitters, they simply aren't as far off as people seem to think they are?

And with Bill tearing it up in Milwaukee, it's certainly easy to question why this trade was necessary in the first place, even an much as I like Murphy.

I said this much when the trade was made. It is not like this season Billy is having came out of no where.. he is just replecating what he did last year and you actually started to see his catching improve when he got behind the plate.. problem is Twit has this man crush on TDA and starts him WAY WAY too much.. even when Billy was here.. But the trade was made and a significant investment was made on Murph. So regardless if he bench 2.xx, he should be getting 70-80% of the reps. And to assume Twit is retro resting Murph because he played so much when TDA was hurt is dumb. If twit doesn't know how to manage a catcher (even when a back up is hurt) then that manager should be fired. Tromp/John Doe/ Sally from Cheeta 3 (does that even exist still) all could have taken a game or 2 while TDA was hurt.

I personally think it has to be hard to get clicking offensively when you are playing every other day.. this team needs Murphy to be the best offensive version of himself come playoff time.. whether that is Bench 2.xx or Evan Gattis circa Braves...
