NBA Thread

Waiters is serviceable as long as he is controlled. He had a lot of good games for us last year in a tough spot. Sounds like there won't even be many nba players next year. In addition, the pick will probably be in the 25-30 range.

I think it's highly likely that Waiters is better than any player taken in that spot during a weak draft.

Well he's likely more talented than any of those players, but it's the Touki Toussaint argument. There's a really good chance that nothing amounts with that pick, but there is also a chance something does work out. For me, Waiters has all of JR's bad qualities with very few of his good ones. Besides that, he's way more expensive than what that pick is and that matters when you are hovering around the luxury tax like the Thunder.

It also removes a potential trade asset come the deadline. What does OKC have to offer if they just need a piece or two come the deadline?

I just don't think there is any sort of silver lining to that trade.

Unless there are another rash of injuries I don't see a need at the deadline. Anything can happen but the thunder are loaded at basically every position.

I think Waiters is better than you make him out to be. He isn't good or anything but he is a fine rotational piece.

You've watched the Thunder long enough to know better than to assume no injuries.

And I have no qualms calling Waiters one of the worst players in the NBA. I think you could sign a D Leaguer and he would provide more value than him. I remember you during the season constantly lampooning him when the Thunder playing him. I don't know why you would sing a different song now.

Waiters improved as the season progressed and was more aggressive. Again, not saying he is any good but I think he is a much better asset then a late first round pick in an awful draft.

Well Waiters is worse than any player you could get with that pick, so I don't see how you can see that as salvageable.

Waiters played well at the end of the year.

But still would like Presti to have another pick to strike gold again.

Waiters is alot better than a DLeaguer.

He isnt what he was drafted to be but if hes used right, he's fine.

Is a late first rounder worth anything if basketball considers the draft awful?

The worst draft in the history of the NBA arguably was in 2013. The non lottery 1st round picks that year:

Giannis

Tony Snell

Mason Plumlee

Dieng

Gobert

Presti also has a strong track record of finding gems late in the draft. You might never get anything of note, but I'll take that upside over the known quantity of sub replacement level production that Waiters has given his entire career (at a much more affordable rate as well).

There is a very good chance that the Thunders pick is going to be 28-30.

If they get a bunch of injuries then the trade sucks.

Gobert was the 28th pick.

So let's say next season the Thunder get off to a great start and things are looking great. The problem is that Cam Payne is struggling as a rookie and the Thunder have issues with their backup PG position. Let's say Darren Collison, Aaron Brooks, Jameer Nelson, etc. is available and the Thunder are interested in upgrading. Typically a 1st rounder is a golden ticket to get a player like that, but I'm fairly certain OKC has their picks tied up until 2018 or something.

What I'm saying is I would prefer that flexibility and/or the chance at lucky pick over watching Dion chuck himself to his 5th consecutive sub replacement level season.

Still have DJ.
