Neverending **** the Police thread.

It's a complicated thing...take new york...de blasio is pretty hopeless as mayor...but I'm amazed at how insubordinate and disrespectful the rank and file are towards him...I know their feelings got hurt when he talked about the dangers of interacting with cops that young men like his son face

the cops in new york are like a kingdom unto themselves...I lived in boston for a while...same thing there...police culture is very resistant to change...they have a tough job but that doesnt excuse them clinging to a mindset that is a disservice to the taxpayers paying their salaries

Most politicians are reluctant to wade into that minefield...the police are politically powerful in most cities and there is a group of voters that will always support law and order politicians...reform is easy to talk about...to achieve it is very hard

Dont forget our obsession with unions.

I was having a conversation with a friend yesterday about the space launch. He was saying Tesla will destroy all the car makers bc they are more worried about their unions and pensions than they are innovation and progress.

First I'd ever thought of it but man is that true.

Same thing police and teachers.there is no incentive structure to be better

Yes. That's why this never gets better. There is no incentive to change. Thats why I want cops to buy liability insurance. Those companies will have a profit motive to get bad cops off the streets BEFORE they kill someone. Because we put police on a pedestal we let them design the system and like any human will do in that situation they built a system designed to protect themself from accountability. Police still think the problem is people dont respect them enough. We need to simplify the criminal code and prioritize crimes with a victim or intended victim. The goal of an police officer should be to prevent crime and make as few arrests as necessary. The best, easiest, and most realistic option is to give young people basic legal training.

That gets to the heart of why I blame cops for this mess. They don't technically make the law but they heavily influence it. They are the obstacle to reform.

they are literally a kingdom unto themselves in a lot of places...politicians know there is mostly downside for them in trying to reform the police...reform gets resisted pretty much every step of the way

Savannah had a sketchy person organizing a protest. The Mayor and authorities found out it was some white guy out of state, trying to instigate.

Mayor then announced there would be an official peaceful protest at the same location.

Just left from there and it was packed. But peaceful. Beautiful. Mayor is African-American but also formerly law enforcement. Played it right. Had they let the unofficial one go, there would probably be some instigators there starting riots.
