Next Move?

Tough to tell at the moment - I'd imagine things will be pretty quiet for a few days to give the Freeman mess time to cool down (or breathe).

Given all the pieces and confirmation that payroll will be going up significantly in 2017, I wouldn't dismiss a deal for Todd Frazier out of hand. $7.5 million salary in his last year of control, and one of those guys that seems pretty convincing when he's asked about money - he sounds like he expects to be paid what's "fair", but isn't looking to break the bank and put the team in a position where they can't be competitive.

Would Miller and Sims get it done? Maybe.

Maybin/Smith, Markakis, Freeman, Frazier, Pierzynski, Olivera, Aybar, Peterson sure would give you a much better offense in a hurry.

Depending on which direction we go and the package I would love Frazier. He's everything you want in a player and a teammate. He's just an easy guy to root for and could come in and take over the clubhouse from Day 1. I'm not sure we're going that route though.

This is making me think there is some validity to the Markakis trade speculation.

Yea but that's no happening. Rosenthal said talks ended when we asked for Pollack. BUT I would love to move Markakis. We're severely limited in targeting long term bats because we can't target any OF's. We need to move Markakis and Maybin

I dont recall anyone saying that. I recall everyone saying "Yeah thats a great move for the Royals they got several good young prospects for a pitcher that wanted out". Starting to get a little worried Coppy is delusional. He thinks Aybar is a better player than Andrelton. He keeps saying we arent going to be that bad and everyone doesnt know what they are talking about but he said the same **** last offseason. I fully expect us to lose 94 games and have him come out declaring victory because he said we wouldnt lose 95 games again.

I could be mistaken but wasn't Greinke closing in on free agency? Not under control 5 years like Simmons?

He was 2 years away when they traded him. Plus, the Royals lost more than 180 games over the 2 years following the deal. So that was just a dumb statement from Coppy.

That we asked for Pollack makes me think that the Braves are pretty set on keeping Miller. The Braves are pretty much willing to move anyone for the right price but the price is obviously going to have to be really right for Miller. D-backs inquired, price was super high, talks ended.

Since Shelby Miller's name first emerged in the trade market, the Giants and Dodgers have checked in on his availability.

As I posted in another thread, I'm not averse to moving Miller for the right deal. I don't want to give him away as he's a young, controllable pitcher coming off a very good season. However, it's still an open question as to how good he'll end up being. He has a chance to be a top of the rotation arm but could still end up as a number 4 starter. I think he's most likely to be a steady number 2 starter in his career. If we could get some good young offense for him, I'd trade him.

I'd want Seagar from the Dodgers. Or Pederson. Miller is too big of a trade chip coming off his best year with multiple years of control. Got to have a James Shields type of return for him.

We could offer our entire team to the Dodgers and I'm pretty sure they wouldn't give up Seagar. It's nice to dream about though.

Not sure how I feel about Pederson. His power is ridiculous and he flashed some wheels in the minors but he struck out in almost 30% of his trips to the plate last year. His high walk rate helped but he looks to be one of those infuriating hitters that either hits it out of the park, walks, or strikes out.

Diamondbacks don't have much in the minors. I think that has to have a lot to do with it. I don't think the Braves will or should move him simply for the sake of moving him. The return has to be right. So, if Arizona wants him and they have no quantity and quality to offer out of their minor league system then it would have to be someone that fills a void for the Braves off of their ML team.

I have to say I am out on Frazier. Yes he did have another good power season, but he started the year off REALLY slow.

Averages over his career:
.232 with 6 HRs
.273 with 19 HRs
.234 with 19HRs
.273 with 29HRs
.255 with 35HRs

Also, he has struck out over 130 times in each of the past 2 seasons, and 125 the year before that. Only walked 44 times last year. Take into account that he is playing in a hitter friendly park, I think the home run total would go down. Also he will be 30 at the start of the year, I don't see him aging well....

He is a decent player in CIN but I don't see it translating well for Atl. I would not give anything for him.

He's also not a spring chicken - will be 30 in Feb - and he is going to get PAID next offseason.

We shouldn't be using any assets on people like that. In fact, it was the justification for trading away Heyward and Upton... and they were actually young

You're suggesting giving up all that for a guy who's a year away from free agency? Is that a joke?

I'm not saying I like the trade proposal, but if you read the link, it's Frazier + 72 hour window for extending him well beyond 2017 (i.e., the trade would be contingent upon a successful extension being negotiated).

I did not read the link... thanks for clarification
