Would anyone trade Miller for Puig? They're close to the same age. They're both under contract for 3 more years. They both have top notch ceilings. Both have risks attached (Miller might regress, Puig has health and clubhouse concerns).
Seems like that would be the basis for a trade. Not sure the Braves have any interest in taking on the Puig Show though.

Depends if the team still intends to contend in 2017. If yes then go for it. We need legit bats. If the contending date is pushed back then he needs to be traded for multiple high end prospects.
Puig is the last person we should go after. He's an a##hat who will alienate his teammates and the fanbase.

I agree. If Puig hits like you hope then he'll demand ridiculous money as a FA after 2018. If we honestly plan to make a legitimate push in 2017, then Puig would be an asset.
Puig does come off as a complete tool. The fact that the Dodgers are willing to trade him seems to confirm that fact. However, you're going to have trouble finding a major league ready bat of his ability who is available and who doesn't come with serious questions. If he was a model teammate and completely healthy, we wouldn't have a prayer of trading for him.
I've worked as a consultant for most of my life. The first thing you suggest doing is getting rid of all workplace cancers. You can usually tell within a day or two who they are.
Prosports is a different beast though. Guys with huge ego's are just part of it. Our culuture is likely to blame for it. High end talents are told from the time they are 12 how great they are and it never stops. And at the pro level you can be a cancer but as long as you produce then people will look the other way. Sadly that's the way it is.
I get that to a certain extent. However, it looks as though we plan on having a young clubhouse for the near future, and kids are much more immature these days already. If a guy like Puig is showing them they never have to grow up then there's not going to be any reason or motivation for them to do so. It's just not worth it for what we're trying to do.
The more I think about it, the less it makes sense for the Braves to trade Miller or Teheran this offseason when there are so many pitchers available on the FA market. I think I would do the following if I were in charge:
1. Sign David Freese for 3B. MLBTR predicts his contract at 3/30. He plays an average 3B, and should put up a line in the neighborhood of .260/.320/.400 with 10-15 HRs. Nothing earth shattering, but he would make a perfect bridge to Riley.
2. Sign one of the 2nd tier FA pitchers to a 3 year deal for around $10M-$12M per year. Towards the end of the offseason one of them should be available for a bargain. Slot him in the rotation right behind Miller and Teheran, and then rotate Wisler and other young guys through the last 2 spots of the rotation until a couple of them stick.
3. Sign a couple reclamation project BP guys like they did with Grilli and JJ last year. No need to spend big bucks on a BP arm when Viz is clearly the closer of the future and several of the pitching prospects will undoubtedly end up in the BP.
4. Go with CB and AJ at C. It's time to see once and for all what CB has to offer. AJ is the perfect backup that can handle more than a backup role if required, and the Braves were smart to lock him up early.
5. Only trade Maybin if he is part of a package including non-elite pitching prospects to bring back a 50 FV position prospect. Otherwise keep him until Mallex is ready, and then trade him at the deadline.
Role into 2016 with this lineup:
Markakis
Olivera
Freeman
Freese
AJ
Maybin
Aybar
Peterson
Rotation of Miller, Teheran, FA, 2 young guys...probably Wisler and Perez to start the year.
At the trade deadline and next offseason revisit trading Miller or Teheran since the FA market for pitchers is much weaker next year.
I have been on this bandwagon before we traded Simmons.
Only changes would be.. I WOULD trade Maybin.. figure a way to clear his salary. 45 -50 FV prospect would be fine.. Have Eury/Bourn platoon in center..
I would also look to trade Aybar.. maybe a package with Maybin for a higher end prospect or two.. and have Castro SS with Pedro backing him up...
Then at the deadline, I would open my club house to anyone who was shopping. I have premium pitchers.. a few older outfielders whose contract I am going to pay the rest of the year. maybe a center fielder (Eury) who can get on base and swipe some bases.. Utility infielders that might be good on the bases or as defensive subs.. Veteran BP guys you may need for the stretch run..
I would set up an old wooden stage with a big carnival tent behind me and start shouting come one come all, step right up and get your players..
I would make this the last year I would want to sell off at the deadline, so I want to dump as much garbage as I can..
Pretty much agree. Aybar and Maybin are definitely on the block, but the return has to be right, especially for Aybar. He is a candidate for a QO after this season, so the return for him has to be good enough to give up that potential draft pick.
I thought about the QO for Aybar.. is he really worth 16 million? I am not sure.. but then I think... Ok.. what if he takes the QO.. who cares.. Braves should have tons of money in 17 and that is one more year to bridge for Albies.
Puig's escape from Cuba is worthy of a Tom Clancy (RIP) novel. He was a live wire, more or less out of control off the field, when he was a first-year pro in Chattanooga coming to terms with having money.

He also had 37 RBI in 40 games. While I worry about his injury history of late, I consider that Fredi might be one of the few managers in baseball who could connect with the kid -- or be able to pass a summary judgement on whether or not he'd be an asset. If the Braves had a healthy Puig for two years, then they would have a potential five-tool talent in hand.
I do wonder if Olivera and forgotten Brave Adonis Garcia have leadership qualities in regards to Hispanic players.
